Mathematics Major

If I were to major in mathematics, or applied mathematics, would I be able to teach high school mathematics without getting an entire Bachelors of Education? Could I just get a certification? Also...would it be better to major in Mathematics education if I ever wanted to become a principle or other education administrator? Kind of torn about a major. Other schools I'd like to go to only have Mathematics or Applied Mathematics rather than Math Education or general education :(, Thanks in advance.

It depends on what state you want to teach in. Each state has its own education regulations. If you can do it, please major in mathematics and not ‘mathematics education.’ The majority of ‘mathematics education’ majors I knew in middle school and high school simply just did not understand mathematics at all. At most, mathematics education majors had to take introductory calculus and stop. It’s ridiculous how minimal requirements are for most of these majors.

Administration in schools normally have advanced degrees, such as a master of arts in education or a Ed.D.

Thanks for the reply :D

Daughter is thinking of this path also. Another good thing about the math major is that if you decide against teaching or cannot find employment, you will still have other options as a math major. In some states, secondary teachers are supposed to show their expertise in their area by obtaining a bachelors degree in it, and then becoming certified or getting the masters in education. I think this would give you more options.
