May 1 Response Deadline Dilemma

So Harvard extended its deadline to May 3 because of the late Open House. However, no other college has. For everywhere else I have applied to, the deadline is May 1, the last day of the open House. I haven’t made my decision yet, and since I never made an official visit to Harvard, I would have to have one before deciding. I suppose I could bring all the reply cards with me to Harvard and make my decision right after the open house, but I think that making the decision at Harvard may give Harvard an unfair advantage, which may or may not be good. I would really like to have take some time after the Open House to see what’s best for me.

Do you think since the response deadline May 1 is a Sunday, I can just postmark on Monday, May 2?

Do you think I can call the other colleges and ask for a response extension since Harvard’s Open House is late, or will they get mad at me and say no?

I’ve gotten into 9 colleges, but I’m seriously considering only 2 or 3. I could send out the response cards for the 6 other colleges right now, but I’m not exactly sure where I’m going. Most reply cards ask for which college you’ll be attending, if not theirs. Can I just write down either one of my top two choices, but what if I change my mind? Will those reply cards be illegal or something, then?

OR… should I just visit Harvard some other time, in mid-April? Would this actually be better or worse?

I'm in a similar situation...thinking of just going to visit Harvard in mid-April and doing the same deal with all the rest of my colleges (so nobody gets an unfair advantage) and then making my decision based on that, but I'm not sure...

"1. Do you think since the response deadline May 1 is a Sunday, I can just postmark on Monday, May 2? "

Ask the colleges. It does seem likely that the answer will be "yes" since at most places, you can't get a Sunday postmark anyway.

If you've narrowed it down to two or three schools, I doubt that any of them would have a problem if you tell them that you're deciding between them and Harvard. Give them a call, and they'd probably extend the deadline a few days.

Alas...what a dilemma...I wish I were in this position!

My thoughts exactly.

hehe, sorry about that. I used the word without really thinking.

No worries. I'm just still a bit melancholy on my rejections.

that makes another one of us
