Ok thanks guys, I will be purchasing direct hits and studying them over the summer in preparation for my final attempt at the SAT in October. Any specific way you guys would recommend studying and utilizing direct hits as efficiently as possible.

Directs Hits is very fast to study from; one could probably master the vocabulary in a day. The most effective method seems to be to write down the words that you do not know on flash cards and then study those.

The examples provided in the book are actually pretty interesting to read (plenty of pop culture references). Since you have plenty of time, I suggest reading through both books a few times and familiarizing yourself with all 400 words (which isn’t many to study over the course of 2-3 months). Personally, I just read through each book once, then used the lists of all the words and definitions at the back of each book.

I agree that Direct Hits has been good in the past, yet on the May SAT, it didn’t help as much as I had hoped. I knew every word yet only got 16/19 sentence completions.

Well if you knew every word then wouldn’t you say that your lack of ability to comprehend what the sentence is looking for is at fault rather than Direct Hits?

I think that he meant that he knew every word from direct hits but that 3 of them were clearly not covered in direct hits.

Given the fact that DH covers 400 words in total, it would be imprudent to assume that memorizing all of the DH words will ensure a 19/19 for the sentence completion section. DH merely familiarizes students with 400 high frequency words which appear on administered SATs most often. However, it has an uncanny ability to cover most of the words on any given test and certainly makes achieving a perfect score for sentence completion questions much more likely.

I have a small question about Direct Hits. June, more likely than not, will be my final attempt at the SAT, and I’m aiming for a 2300. I need just about 19/19 on SC because I’m a perfectionist, but 17-18/19 and I can still get that 700 I’m aiming for on CR. 730+ if all the SC’s are correct.
So my question: I asked a local bookstore for DH, and they don’t have it. So I went online but can’t for the life of me find it as an e-book anywhere at ALL (!!) so I asked my bookstore how long and how much it would cost to get the books by ordering them - $70 for both books, 2 weeks. Obviously, I’m not paying it.
I have the index of words for the first volume, but not the second. Assuming I can somehow get the index of the second and study the words’ definitions (I’ll just look them up) well along with the 1st, do you think it’s as effective as just reading the DH books? I would’ve gotten it as an e-book in a flash but it’s just NOWHERE.
I was using Barron’s 3500 list, but I got to D and realized it’s just annoying as hell. I might continue reading it, but I won’t memorize every word of it. DH is my priority at the moment.

I’d really appreciate an answer, thanks :)

I rofled. silverturtle, what did you get on Lit and Chem?

The detailed score reports are coming out tomorrow!!

Here’s my Subject Test portfolio:

May
Math Level 2: 800
Chemistry: 800
Literature: 670 (not too great :))

June
Literature

October
Maybe Literature
Physics
US History

Even if the other tests don’t pan out nicely (though I expect US History and Physics will work out), at least I know I have good scores for all the schools I’m applying to (2400/36/2*800), as only Georgetown requires three Subject Tests now.

holy mother of christina aguilera!!!

Ralec has witnessed an imperfection in Silverturtle, his faith has vanished :)

^^lol, that’s silverturtle you’re talking about there.

^I know right? what a horrible score. I think he is utterly disappointed. sigh

What!??! He’s human!?!

There is only one viable explanation, Silverturtle’s account has been compromised.

silverturtle, it seems, is a human and not a turtle contrary to popular belief.

Perhaps this is SilverTurtle’s idea of a sick joke…

Or maybe, meteman is correct.

Corenetking222, that is absolutely ridiculous. He’s not human.

I must say that I did not expect such a significant response!
