^ If you don’t expect a score increase, I would recommend not retaking in your case.

silverturtle, what would you say is the maximum point increase POSSIBLE. like, potential = completely maxed out.

This is to anyone who score 2200+: How much did you prepare?

@ RAlec114

I believe that it is exactly 1800 points.

For most people, probably ~250 points. Larger increases certainly happen, though.

For my freshman score (2270), I did no preparation. For my junior score (2400), I a few Blue Book practice tests and a couple PSAT practice tests (several months earlier, though); additionally, I posted a lot on CC to help others, in turn helping me some.

^congrats, you definitely deserved the perfect score!! :)

On a rather unrelated note (which has little to do with the topic of this thread),

I do find that most parents who are senior posters on this website are very knowledgeable and know what they’re talking about. Several of them are your guidance counselors or are parents whose kids are now attending the schools to which many of you will probably be applying in the very near future. Though I mostly agree with you on the whole SAT issue, I just want to say that it is potentially unwise to completely disregard their advice.

Anyway, end of digression. 1500th post!!

For my 2350 sophomore year first time (May 1 exam), I got BB, read through it and did all the practice tests in maybe a bit less than a month. It never got to be too tedious or stressful, surprisingly. I didn’t do any brushing up on my vocabulary - I’m well-read to begin with, and I see the voluminous lists of words to be utterly foolish as mass retention of words (talking in the thousands here) is difficult at best unless you happen to be a prodigy and in the end not worth it. I did pen a few practice essays to hone my let’s-see-how-much-superfluous-junk-i-can-fit-in-two-pages-in-25-minutes method. Earned me an 11/12 essay. Oh, and of course I lurked around CC ;)

All in all, probably 50 hours. Incredibly worth at the end of the day, for both college admissions and life in general - I’ve had people whom I’ve never met coming out of the woodworks to talk to me about my score (anything near perfect is basically unprecedented in my school).

Good luck!

Yes, there are certainly many knowledgeable and helpful parents on CC. However, I was referring to several whom I have debated on the Parents Forum who were rather dogged in their support of absurd notions with respect to SAT scores in admissions. In fact, to my surprise one of these posters (a generally well-respected poster among parents and a member with many thousands of posts) was obscenely and repeatedly rude toward me during an extended Personal Messaging discussion – he/she came across as perhaps the worst CCer I’ve encountered. I do not generalize this, though, and definitely do not disregard parents’ advice on a blanket basis.

hey everyone…is -4 writing (3 wrong) and a 10 essay leading to a 710 harsh?

I took the May 15th makeup one and got a 2390. The breakdown is 800 M and CR and a 790 writing. I missed 0 on math, 2 on CR, and 2 on writing with a 12 essay (seems kinda brutal). My essay absolutely proves that the essay grading is complete BS, too. The extent of my preparation was the PSAT and looking at a few past essay options.

guys my score is much much lower than what i expected…should i go for a recheck?..why wouldnt anyone tell me i posted earlier too!!!

^ How much lower than expected?

like 300 points…

Per section or overall? Did you base this off the consolidated lists and historical curves?

overall.
plus i made a mistake in the statistics section of mathematics, and the mistake appears in algebra and functions section for some reason. my CR and CW sections’ scores have gone down drastically.
as for what i based it upon, even if the curve was the harshest ever this time, it would have, in my opinion, gotten me atleast 250 points more than what ive got.:(…300 is like average of lenient and harsh curves.

If the cost is not problematic, have it rescored if you truly feel there has been an error. As the test-taker, you have the best sense of this (as long as you are aware of the typical curves and the agreed-upon answers).

cost doesnt matter. as long as i get paid for my 4 months hard work for this test!..thnx for the advice.

Harq01…what is the May 15th make up test? Is it the same test as the May 1st???

I need a little help here too.
I expected a 760 on M and 800 on W (got 720 in Jan on M and 790 in May on W). The latter was more important because I wanted to just neglect it (not completely, but just not concentrate on it) next time. It’s usually child’s play for me, but still, takes it out of me when it’s 60 minutes. I’d rather just do it carelessly and get like a 700 next time, to do better on the other sections. I got a 790 with 80 MC, all because of the essay grading, which is totally inconsistent. I wrote better than last time and got a lower score (10 before, 9 now).
760 M was just for personal satisfaction. I’m not going to accept anything lower than an 800 anyway.

So do you guys think a retake should get me a score of 2300? I’ve been doing a lot of practice. I’m going to do all the BB tests (minus the writing) and check everything I’m not 100% sure of in M and CR and maybe brush up on a few essay examples (Jane Eyre, etc.). Going to try for an 800 on the W next time anyway.

The May 15th test was a completely different test. I know because the test was canceled due to inclement weather after we had already taken a few sections.
