MAY 2013 PHYSICS THREAD (question pool)

Like this I believe http://i.imgur.com/XDgdUEj.png

Okay good…I guess 12 wrong should still be an 800 then. There was some other question I guessed on I can’t really remember, it was before the bell damping one. Was damping the correct answer to the bell question and does anyone remember the question before?

wasn’t the question before damping one choosing appropriate graph for a given situation? How many graph questions were there in part A? kmb987’s list shows 3

Damping is definitely correct. The question before it, i think, was the one about the stars seeming below (above?) their actual position when near the earth’s horizon. I put refraction for that one.

Also, in the question about red light being diffracted less, there was an answer choice to do with dispersion (i put that one). How come that one’s not right?
There was also a choice about changing (increasing? i forgot) the length of the bar in the rate of heat transfer question. Why is that not right either?
How come the ball in the spiral going straight out tangent isn’t right? did it say somewhere in the question that the spiral was vertical and there was gravity or something?

For red light being diffracted less, I believe dispersion wasn’t an option because I remembered looking for it. In the rate of heat transfer one, Q = kA(Th - Tc)/d and the option you’re thinking of was “decrease the length of the bar” which would increase Q. Increasing T_c would cause Q to decrease. In the spiral one, I would assume they didn’t mean there was no gravity unless it was a trick question…which I suppose is possible

If you increase the length of the bar, heat transfer decreases. However, as far as i remember, the answer choice said ‘decrease the length of the bar.’
The ball in the spiral travels in a straight path after coming out. I’m pretty sure of this.

btw, does anyone remember choosing a quadratic graph as an answer for part A graph matching questions?

[PhysicsLAB: Spiral Tube](PhysicsLAB: Spiral Tube)

Wait why would it be a straight path? Was there no gravity?

Wasn’t it like this? http://i.imgur.com/TV25Kvx.png

@kmb987: Read the question. It said lying horizontally on the table.

why would it curve to the right when there’s no force acting on the ball?

I remember searching for a statement about gravity, but I don’t think I found one, so I picked the straight path (B, i think)… The tube may have been flat.

It would curve to the right because of the gravitational force, if it was horizontally flat then it would still fall.

The question said that the tube lies flat on the table. Not to its normal

@wlsnehf: Yes; one of the answers I put was a quadratic graph. For one of the questions, it said acceleration was increasing at a steady rate. Al the graphs in the answer choices were between speed and time.

“Graph of speed when a ball is thrown up and then falls – decreasing to 0, then increasing”

Does anyone else remember this question? If yes, what did the graph look like?
