May SAT 2011: CR Section

Hello everyone, anyone have any idea what like 5 or 6 wrong would be?

Also my contributions was mild skepticism because i interpreted as the first passage writer is fascinated and thinks the whole topic of the art is still undiscovered so having Gunthrie describe a process that tried to fully explain this complex topic would make him be skeptical.

The question for whether jazz was personal/creative vs. hard to define/distinctive was a 50/50 guess for me lol.

I think the specific lines were something along the lines of, “each musician must achieve the subtle identification between the instrument and the performer, then develop their own unique style.”

I thought that the uniqueness would be ‘creative’ and that overall it’d be a really personal process for the musician… but both answers sound correct. And I only remember the personal/creative answer choice clearly, might be fudging up the other option…

@Dancingbear
1)yes
2)yes

2)if I paid the extra 18$ for the thing, does that mean I will get the questions sent to me?

no. i got a ****ty sheet mailed to me showing my answer choices, the correct answer, and other fairly useless stuff (in my opinion.) collegeboard wouldn’t leak its questions on there, especially in light of the fact that they’ve taken an affinity to recycling our tests.

@Qwerty eowiehyogiwhgfhoiw why could it have not been the black girl one whfiehgoewghoiewhgo. For most of the passage I felt that SHE was the actual singer.

@Yoursky oh poop.

Does Collegeboard release answers later?

Omg, i am sooo mad. I thought CR on this one was much harder than March. Now, I’m looking at these answers and it seems as though i messed up the vocab not the actual CR…so upset right now. I am terrible at vocab, that doesn’t mean i can’t read. They should just take vocab out.

dancinggbear the girl was NOT the singer. The actual singer is Marion Anderson I learned about her earlier in the year in history. Anderson wasn’t allowed to sing because she was African American; this appalled FDR and he had her sing at the Lincoln Memorial Easter sunday. The girl in the story was a voice student coming to the concert ( she’s also african american) and this was very significant in history.

was CR yesterday harder one compare to other CR?

@yoursky and dancinggbear: Collegeboard mailed me both the the questions and answers from when I took it in January. I’m pretty sure you do get them.

Caperi: I also don’t think the first jazz answer on the consolidated list is right. The passage didn’t seem to convey that learning jazz was demanding, but, rather, that conservatory training can only get one so far, and, to excel further, one must look within themselves. So… in essence, he was debating the value of classical jazz training against another approach - that is, looking within yourself to get in touch with your music, which was the whole point of the next paragraph. Thus, my answer choice was whichever one included the word “value” in it, and I’m pretty confident about my selection.

tlstoqur, it honestly was harder. I took the March SATs and thought that CR was fairly easier than this one. The curve for March was really harsh, so I’m hoping for a generous curve this time around.

@satlover IK! I only realized this half way through the passage. OMG + during that passage there was a football game or something where I was taking it and they were singing, “oh say can you see, by the dawns early light…” The proctor insisted with stand up -.-'

Did anyone post all three sections on one consolidated list yet?

qwerty: are you serious ■■■■. that seems quite likely actually considering collegeboard tends to lose stuff in the mail when they send things over to my address but ha. are you kidding me. aksdfpodsihfosh k hahaha the whole point of me ordering that service last test was so that i could prep for the next one but it truly aggravates me how easily preventable this situation was. sigh. well on the bright side at least everyone knows for sure they should get the questions too :)

i got all answers but 6

i wanna get those answers sooooo badddddd

Hi…i just tuned into this thread and hopefully someone can fill me in and confirm/correct my answers…

For the black concert reading:
What did the reference to a river represent? I said force of nature.
And the question about Washington D.C. looking like a post card? I said she was seeing an idealized version of the city.

For the cave art reading:
What would both authors agree on? I said that it was accessible and soothing.

@partyallthetime

RIVER -> nature
D.C. -> idealized

^ idealized is right, accessible and soothing is wrong
it never mentioned anything about accessibility and the correct answer would be evocative and moving

onto the jazz, i am positive that the first answer choice should be “theoretical training should precede formal training” because the whole first paragraph or half of the passage was talking about how conventional artists spend a whole lot of time on things like intonation and practice, it then shifted by saying something like “although jazz players also practice intonation, it is much more important that they find their own soul”
hence the precede

^ ■■■■: there was also a sentence in that passage that said they have to do formal training and THEN find their own soul. which goes against the concept of precedes. i remember i was going to put in precedes as well until i saw that sentence
