S2 is in final year of undergrad, and will apply for med school (md/phd) this cycle 2014 with plans for a gap/glide year after graduating in april. most schools currently dont require sociology, but with the changes in mcat coming, do you foresee sociology becoming a requirement? hopefully he would be admitted 1st time (fingers crossed). but if he wasnt accepted and had to try again, anyone think the sociology requirement could kick in and apply to the 2015 applications ie 2016 class?

he’s just trying to decide whether he should fit in 1 semester of sociology just in case. he has psych already if that was added.

It’s going to happen on a school-by-school basis if it does. A few medical schools have already added psych and soc to their requirements. (Indiana I know for sure has already.)

Several other med schools require a specific number of social science credits (8-12, IIRC) for admission.

He might try emailing the adcomms at a few of the schools he’s most interested in and asking if they anticipate any changes. He also might email and ask if he’s accepted this cycle and then defers, if he will be required to fulfill any new pre-reqs (like sociology) when he matriculates the following year. (I suspect he will.)

(And he does know that not all med schools will allow accepted students to defer their admission, right? MD/PhD and MSTP programs are especially relectant to allow an accepted student to defer his admission.)

yes he knows about deferring…i probably didnt word it right…he graduates this april and will be applying to schools in june…during the next year he will be doing more research with the intent that if accepted he will attend june 2015. (he isnt waiting until 2015 to apply…)

OK, so he’s applying next cycle-- the 2014-15 cycle. Not the current cycle – the 2013-14.

wowm… correct, and if accepted, i think he is fine currently, it is just if he is not accepted and has to apply again, that i wonder about.

Has he taken his MCAT yet?

takes it thursday texaspg! seems pretty calm

see where i confused people by saying “this cycle”… in my mind applying to attend in 2014 is over… i have moved on to thinking of applying next june as this cycle. so again to clarify. graduates april 2014, will be putting in apps to start md/phd in 2015 (applying june 2014)

The cycle is lon_g and far from over. There are people still submitting applications for this cycle. In fact, applications won’t close until sometime between Oct-Dec 2013—depending on the particular school.

agree wowm… heard someone who is taking the mcat on thursday is still planning to apply once they get score back sept 29. but for my son, the 2014 path is over, he decided to take a year off and keep doing some research first.

Wise decision. It would be a bad idea to start mid to late September for MD/PhD.

Does he have a plan for glide year?
