I understand that there are other important factors, especially personal statement/experience/letters of recommendation. I wanted to know if anyone had an educated opinion regarding following two sets of scores: Student with MCAT score 35 and GPA 3.5 or MCAT score 31 and GPA 3.9; i.e. which do you think would a med school admissions look more favorably upon?

This is a smartalec answer...the student with the 3.9 GPA and 35 MCAT

I feel the two are very often linked...Students who do well in their classes (I'm assuming a science major here) tend to be better prepared for their MCAT

Personally, if I were a med school admissions worker and I saw a low GPA with a high MCAT, then I would think the student is a slacker in school and only pays attention on big exams...NOT a good trait

Conversely, if the student has a good GPA and chokes on the MCAT, then I would think the student is inept at taking big exams. Again, NOT a good characteristic to have included in your admissions file.

Those are the stats I'm hoping for, impactangel.

I wouldn't really call a 3.5 a slacker GPA nor would I call a 31 on the MCATs choking... but I do understand what your getting at.

I've seen a lot of these cases....and YES both of them happen. A lot of times it has to do with the major: lots of English majors get high GPAs and low MCAT scores(I still don't understand why English majors operate on people, but I don't make the laws) while science majors (who are good at science I'm assuming?) have a harder time getting a good GPA but get good MCAT scores.

Unfortunately, I would say that the GPA wins in the end. Especially if you are a non-science major or you go to a bad school, for some reason, admission officers don't care that much. A 3.9 GPA and a 31 MCAT will ALWAYS ALWAYS beat a 39 MCAT 3.1 GPA...llook at mdapplicants.com and you will see.

I would definitely agree with the above statement.

In general, 30 and above is considered solid on the MCAT

3.5 and above is considered solid with GPA

Anything lower than 3.5 and I hope you've got some amazing research/extracurriculars or a 45 on that MCAT!
