For anyone who has----Actually---- taken the class or had close friends in it... (not you coolbrezze, I don't want to hear anything you've "heard" or any general comments)

How much of a time commitment is the class and what is the difficulty in comparison to like bio 222, or orgo, or gen. chem. or math 285, or something?

I have a lot of friends in the premed track (microbio, biochem, etc) that have taken this course. I’ve heard comments from it not being as bad as they thought, to being difficult. Overall, I think its on the difficult side of the average Pre-med course; however, it doesn’t seem to be the hardest course to take. It seems to be the course where if you study hard and test well, you will do fine, but if you slack off, it will be difficult. I don’t know if thats of much help but its the feeling I get from the people who have taken this course. If you’re really thinking of taking that course, you should definitely get opinions directly from peers that have taken it.

I’ve taken it. It is a *****, plain and simple. Each lecture has 50-60 slides, and you have to memorize absolutely everything. You will get plenty of questions on exams where your getting it right will depend on you having memorized the top right corner of slide 37 of lecture 6, for instance. The amount of work that you need to put in to do well is much, much more than what was necessary for orgo or gen chem (which is why the class is, accordingly, much harder). Balazovich is kind of a jackass too, but if you go to office hours, he will help you with some of the harder stuff.

Yeah, the class sucks, and I recommend that anyone taking biochem do 415 (or even 351 now, with Dr. Nolta teaching it). That said, though, 310 did help me some in studying for the MCAT, which I took a few months after that, so it’s a plus. Worth it? Probably not.

I heard that 310 was easy, but this was coming from a person who literally fell asleep reaching for her binders and books. She studied that much.
