Does anyone have information of how helpful it is being part of the McDermott Scholars program at UTDallas, for a Pre-Med student aspiring to enter an MD Program? I would imagine that it may be well known amongst the Texas Medical Schools. Any idea about how well known it is outside Texas and would it help the Med Sch Apps? My child has been accepted to both the McDermott at UTDallas and Dean's Honors Scholars Program at UTAustin tho DHS has not yet offered any scholarships. Also wondering how going to McDermott would compare to attending an, say Rice or Ivy school.

I just posted again on the Parents Forum. I remembered two threads that specifically discussed the question.

utd is a fantastic school for premed. mcdermott is icing on the cake. it is a lot of work to be a scholar, which is why they get monthly stipends. im not too familiar with ut’s dean’s honors program so i cant really compare the two. i didnt apply to ut at all. the incoming class looks like there will be a lot of premeds, which can be good or bad.
for texas med schools, mcdermott will help. out of state, it might not since its still a relatively young program. PM me if you have any specific questions. I would love to help. I know you have a week to decide, so i’ll try to respond quickly while taking a break from studying for midterms.
