In the new QS world university ranking, McGill's ranked 22 (!!!!) in life sciences!!! Last year, it was 10th!(which was reason i chose mcgill, btw) How the hell can McGill go down so much in a year?!

because it was grossly inflated last year. And it still is inflated. We are in a comparable state school my friend that should be around 50-60 in the world.

Econgrad, why don’t you transfer out to a “decent state school” if you are so dissatisfied with McGill. Or are you really a student at Concordia?

Tom, if you don’t agree with me please rebuttal my points. Making personal attacks is not cool man. I have never said anything against you and in fact I said I respect you because you put up the Times rankings when you said you would knowing the rankings fell a lot for mcgill.

You graduated a few years ago, and I am currently at student in econ and finance so my observations are more recent. At least the ranking trends share my view.

Maclean’s and QS surveys rank McGill high, ARWU ranks McGill lower and Times Reuters middling. There is no “trend” here, only your selective focus on the low rankings to support your personal opinion.

How is suggesting that you transfer to a “better” school a personal attack? You seem very dissatisfied with McGill and you earlier posted about the relative merits of UIUC (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) compared to McGill.

Your posts seem aimed at discouraging students from applying and telling most everyone that they are 100% guaranteed to be admitted.

QS and Times were merged before this year. And if you look at the past several years the trend has been down sloping and accelerating. ARWU is consistent and it is quantitative. Macleans is only canada so it is very selective. So if you do your research then the most quantitative ranking reports put mcgill around 40-60.

We are talking about the rankings Tom, so what does transferring to a “better” school and suggesting i am from concordia has anything to do with it? This is completely irrelevant and a low jab.

I tell people that they are 100% guaranteed because they have good stats and they are 100% in. I think in order to improve the quality of our alma mater is first to take an objective understanding of where it stands instead of painting this gilded superficial to cover up for our deficits. This would be cheating the prospective students.

econgrad, you really seem to enjoy describing how deficient McGill is. If applicants think it is HYPSM, they are mistaken.

“Sloping and accelerating”?? LOL Please list your sources and your trend analysis study.

Your comments do come across as those of a bitter applicant who was rejected and ended up at a less selective school like Concordia. If you are so dissatisfied, you should transfer (your posting about UIUC indicates that you are considering it). Why stay another three years at a place you are not happy other than for the chance to come on here and denigrate the school?

Yes, my suggestion that you are actually a Concordia student was a low blow but I still think it’s true.

We can talk about rankings and whatnot but we don’t make them. So in the end it doesn’t matter a whole lot. The only international ranking newspaper (out of 3) has mcgill in the top 20. The other two have mcgill significantly lower. We can’t just all hail QS and forget about the other two. Let the rankings do the talking.

I am not a concordia student myself and i don’t know anyone really well from concordia. But i really dislike us mcgill students talking bad about concordia, at frosh and CC. It is just rude. It is not a great school but we aren’t either. It completely one sided. Let our achievements do the comparison.
