McGill has two types of merit scholarships . One is offered at then time of the admission , it’s only for one year , and another one is a renewable scholarship , that you applied for . It’s goes through the different process and student will get a respond in few months . Application Deadline for Renewable merit was back in January . It’s a separate application . Both Canadian and International students are eligible .
They have a good explanation on their website , google McGill scholarships . They also offer a financial aid , but I am not familiar with a process .
Has anyone heard from the Schulich School of Music yet?
Has anybody heard from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences?
Hello , I have a qestion about health insurance at the university . As canadian dual can DD 22 apply for a canadian health insurance or she just simply buy a university health insurance . SHe does have a US health unsurance through me , but I am not sure if she will be accepted in Canada. I have read on FB Mcgill parents page that students have difficulty accessing a health care in MTL. Any advise is appreciated !
Health insurance has been a problem, esp. with Covid and being remote!
So, for ease, we attempted to purchase a package through McGill and forego, RAMQ (Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec), but we could not and had to go to Ramq because of her status.
We went, got her enrolled but, there is a 3-month period before it can be effective, so we purchased an international plan for CDN through AAA for the first 3 months. US insurance does not cover (or little) outside US.
The RAMQ card is good only for a year (reason is abuse, I think) and needs tobe renewed. For this, she had to prove that she has been in QC for > 180 days though phone bills, etc. and other documentation. It was a little more complicated as Covid started her 2nd semester and they were remote for a little bit. She went back in September 2020 and she eventually got it all straightened out! After the first year renewal, no need to renew anymore, here again, I think it is to prevent abuse.
That said, it has been difficult to assess services. She went to McGill health services once and she had to be there super early to insure she would be seen the same day.
The Health services in QC will soon undergo big changes as there is a lot of unefficiency and problems having a PCP.
Maybe some people @SwimmingDad or @57special have more info or different experiences!
Our experience has been the same. US citizen here - so this is our experience. Health services in Quebec (and therefore McGill) aren’t great and the pandemic made things worse. Our youngest needed some specialists and we had to intervene a bit to help get him set up.
That said, we love the idea that Pharmacists in Montreal are so helpful. They will ask questions and help you pick out either over the counter medicines or give you a good idea for next steps. Huge difference versus the US and helped our kids deal with colds, sinus troubles, etc. I cannot begin to tell you how helpful. The other thing; 811. You can call 811 and speak to a nurse who essentially does triage by phone - another helpful service. Between the pharmacists and 811, we had most things covered.
McGill definitely has work to do on its on campus health services and Quebec needs to improve access to medical care. This wasn’t a huge deal for us overall - but something to be mindful of going in. I hope this helps.
Thank you very much !!
Thank you very much , super helpful !
