Hey, everyone. I am considering UofT and McGill. Is McGill worth it as an American? I am pretty competitive for top 30 schools in the United States, but I would be happy going to a Canadian school as well.
While McGill and UToronto are similar academically the environment is quite different in each city. I think of Toronto as Chicago with a low crime rate. Montreal is a bilingual city that will give you a taste of a unique culture n North America, Also Montreal caters to students in a way Toronto does not.

If by “worth it” you mean financially, McGill is a bit cheaper for internationals, especially in Arts. Also the cost of off campus housing in Toronto is similar to Boston, in other words, through the roof. Montreal housing is much cheaper.
I mean like reputation-wise. Would employers know what McGill is? I am planning on moving to Florida once I am out of undergrad.
McGill is widely known in the US among those that matter: employers, grad school adcoms etc. On the east coast McGill has name recognition for many people.
What program are you interested in? For example Desautels has a strong international focus.
McGill has a strong rep in the Northeast US, for sure. It is known of in the UK/France, and little bit in Asia. Both U of T and McGill would have very good to excellent reps amongst academics everywhere. Fla?..don’t know. Most people here in the midwest don’t know where or what McGill is.
What sort of job are you looking at after school?
Looking to go into economics, government, or statistics. @57special
Check the 2018 boards. One of our class of 18 students went to McGill.
McGill has an excellent global reputation. You should apply soon - being above minima standards gets you a quick acceptance, which is nice to have in hand. You should be sure to check it out in person before committing. It definitely has a specific vibe that was unlike any other stateside schools.
Either McGill or U of T would be excellent for Economics or Stats. I am sure their Government courses are great, also, and I’m sure they’d have a course of study on U.S Gov, but it is, of course a Canadian school, so maybe neither is the best choice for U S Government, if that is your bent.
I know that McGill’s honours Econ degree is exceptionally rigorous, and I’m sure U of T’s is also. The Honors courses tend to have a lot more Math content.
S1 is at Desautel, which is the business school. We are from the US. He is enjoying it, though I think the workload is ramping up as they go into the first term finals which start in December.
