McGill v. Macaulay Honors at CUNY!

McGill is my top choice, but I feel that I am about 8,000-10,000 CAD short. Is it easy to make up for this?

Macaulay has a lot of perks, but I don't know too much about its reputation. And I've lived in the NY area for the past six years. :(

Interested in biological sciences, btw.

Thanks!

Is this 8 to 10k for one year, or 8 to 10k for all four years? If you can’t come up with the money for McGill, then this is a no-brainer. Go to Macaulay.

You should be able to find out something about Macaulay here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/new-york-colleges/</a>

8 to 10 K for this first year. Unfortunately, I won’t hear about scholarships or work-study information until after the May 1st deadline, so I really am stuck (I feel that I might have a few thousand in scholarships, but I’m not certain). I’m afraid that Macaulay isn’t as recognized as McGill, and that that would follow me in later years when I am applying to graduate school or work.

Everyone in higher education knows Macaulay, so don’t worry about it having a negative effect on grad school admissions. If you are concerned about job placement, pick up the phone and call the Career Center and ask them which companies recruit on campus, and where their graduates end up.

As for the money at McGill, are you expected to accept the offer of admissions before you learn about your scholarships? If so, that makes no sense whatsoever. Pick up the phone and call them. Find out if you can delay accepting their offer until you really do have all the details. That way you could accept Macaulay now, and treat McGill as a wait-list situation.

If you are Canadian, obviously you can pick up any kind of off campus job that you want in Montreal to help pay for McGill. If you aren’t Canadian, you will get work permission with your student visa, but you need to check to see what limits that permission has. You also need to sit down with your parents or whoever else it is who is helping you pay for your education, and find out whether or not you can come up with the missing 8,000 to 10,000 CAD each year for the time that your program is expected to last. Maybe it will be do-able without a scholarship. But if it isn’t, you are truly fortunate to have a very good offer from Macaulay!

Thank you for your help. The scholarships are in no way affiliated with McGill - they are actually local scholarships given through my high school, which I’ll learn about in June. I really appreciate your input on Macaulay though - its very encouraging. Thanks again!

You need to find out if those local scholarships will be for one year, or if they are renewable in future years and what the requirement would be to renew them. Often local scholarships are only for one year, so if you are looking at an 8 to 10k difference each year for four years, you could be in trouble come year two.

Yes, I’ve already considered that. But thanks. :)
