I'm sure that generalization is incorrect. Just as there are a few Rice students who are homophobes in a midst of the politically correct and tolerant majority, there are varying opinions throughout the state of Texas. One can't assume tolerance only resides within the city limits of Houston (or Austin) in the great state of Texas.

Well you are probably, right. But I am trying to demonstrate what the previous posters were probably thinking.

Also, I've lived all of my life in Texas and am now a Rice student, so I am quite familiar with both worlds.

I understand what you are saying misterme...Rice is a great school...overwhelmingly one is more likely to find tolerance, acceptance and support there rather than the opposite.

I'm a fifth generation Native Texan....grew up in a very small, rural town in South Texas. You'd be surprised at how well informed and tolerant many are who live outside of the big city. Not saying there aren't a few bad apples...but that can be said of anyplace.

PS...the other great thing about Rice. BASEBALL! Rooting for a win for Rice tonight and ultimately a showdown between Carolina (where my d will attend) and Rice. Wouldn't that be grand?!

well reiteration cant harm

I dont think you can say the whole group is tolerant also. i think it varies from person to person and this issue has many things that affect it not just "tolerance".

gosh folks... this got taken waaaayyyy to seriously. I can't speak for others, but I was just kidding.

... and the bbl game tonight was a bit of a heart-stopper. But... a WIN!

No one said the whole group was tolerant. Just overwhelmingly so.

jym...yes it was a heartstopper...had to walk away a few times..lol!

Now tonight, in our house, we don't know who we want to win in our loser bracket...Clemson or Cal State. Cal State should be easier for Carolina to beat, but we have beat Clemson once (against all odds). Either way, if I'm not mistaken, Carolina goes to the finals if we win the game tomorrow night. Go Heels!! (and Owls!)

ldmom-
If I follow the playoff schedule correctly (and I probably don't), UNC might possibly have 2 more games to play. They are in game 11 for sure http://www.cstv.com/championshipcentral/baseball/cws06.html
There might be a game 13, but I can't figure out how it works. The actual world series begins on Saturday the 24th.

I will also have to pick your brain about UNC, as we are taking younger s. for a tour in July when we head up to Duke for a summer program. Last yr we just drove through campus and hit the little strip of shops just off campus. Suggestions?

i dont think this issue falls under just tolerance. thats why it is such a touchy subject. but i agree with you that Rice undergrads are more open minded and "tolerant."

jym...

I think if Carolina beats Cal State in the next game, there will be no Game 13. Game 13 only comes into play if UNC loses to Cal State tomorrow night....in which case, Carolina will get to play Cal State again (Game 13 is for the winner of Game 11 and the loser of Game 11 if it is their first loss. Confusing I know.) BTW! We are so excited that Clemson was eliminated! But wow...Cal State is playing good baseball!

About Carolina...what a great school. Quality of student life is excellent...of the best in the nation. Campus is stunning, the school is extremely prestigious. The Journalism undergrad program is ranked up there with Columbia and the Kenan Flagler is tied with UT McCombs in the top 5. Honors Program is in the top 8 of all public/privates. The pre-med program is very respectable with high med school acceptance rate and well regarded medical school/medical center on campus. In fact, most UNC undergrad programs pretty much open the doors of the best grad schools.

I just re-read your post btw. Is your son doing a TIP program at Duke? Or is he older? Our youngest was invited to Duke for TIP this summer based on his 7th grade SAT, but band camp and summer school conflict unfortunately.

I will say this about Carolina. If your son is an out-of-state candidate, admissions is tough because of state laws required 82% in-state enrollment. I think it runs between 15-20% every year for o-o-s applicants. But if he is doing summer programs at Duke, obviously he is a highly qualified candidate.

Sorry for going off topic here...this post might be yanked for it. I'll pm you with more about Carolina.

ldmom-
I know we are off topic, and we can chat elsewhere, but to answer your q., yes- son #2 is going to TIP (or as he calls it, "nerd camp") for the 3rd yr. Each yr he goes, he seems to mark off another area of possible interest! After yr 1 (Debate class) he decided it wasn't for him. Last yr he loved Sports Law but said the only career in sports law is as an agent, and its a hard job to get. This yr he's taking a class on Cancer- so that may remove medicine from his list of interests. He's gone from history/political science to finance to law to medicine. As you can tell, he's not too sure what he wants to be when he grows up!

And yes, we are OOS, so he's in the pool of 18% that would come from outside NC. He's a smart kid with decent grades. Hopefully he has a shot.

Oooooohhhh. SO SAD right now. :( (about baseball)

New college world series record.... 23 straight innings without a run...

oh jen and jym - me too ...sad that is :-(

I specifically requested a UNC-Rice showdown...darn it! I don't understand what happened to the boys tonight....very uncharacteristic for such a strong ball club. A little unnerving for the 'Heels too...Oregon seems to be on a streak and we just squeaked it out with Cal State. :-/ Oh well....we'll have Woodard back in the game; hopefully that will make a difference.
