McMurtry College?

Here is a link to an article on the Rice Website that has to do with these philanthropists who give all this money to Rice. http://media.rice.edu/media/NewsBot.asp?MODE=VIEW&ID=8608
They just recently (announced yesterday) gave another 32 million. The article discusses at length the role this donation will have on the new residential college and the increase in student enrollment. It says "Recognizing their lifetime of generous contributions to Rice, their volunteer leadership and their commitment of time to their alma mater, Rice will name the 10 th college 'Burton and Deedee McMurtry College.'"

They seem like a really cute old couple. The article says that they met in HS and started dating at Rice. He was the Student Association president and she was the vice president.

I wonder what some of the cheers will be. I hope they are better than "10% More"

Wow. I'm amazed at all of the positive change that's been happening at Rice since I got there last year.

It is almost too much. I would be siked to go to Rice in about 5 years. It will have a new rec center and larger population, both of which I believe are needed greatly.

thats a long ugly name, sorry.

I met them once - they are really cute. and really nice. and REALLY rich.

I guess, though, that for a while, it will actually become known as McMurtry Dormitory, and Martel will finally get to be a college.

I vote it's McMurtry College and stays Martel Dormitory ;)

Too bad they didn't just use his first name. Burton College sounds a little more dignified. Gee--and then they could have funded a second one and named it Deedee college, after his wife  Seriously, its a mouthful, but if you give a lot of $$ you can probaly just about call it whatever you want.

BTW, great baseball game today! Sat at a sportsbar in Rice Tshirts, cheering whenever Rice scored against Georgia (PS- we're in Atlanta). Good thing the folks in room we were in were mostly watching the World Cup soccer game. Only one time was it an issue- Rice sored (and we cheered) just as Italy scored against the US! Fortunately they realized who we were cheering for (tho some of them were wearing UGA hats too....) Rough crowd!

I guess they could go with the first name - after all, sid's official name is sid w. richardson college

And it was a great ball game - I was watching at home - Way to go, Owls!

Do you suppose it will be nicknamed McCollege or Micky M"s?

Up here in New Hampshire, we're wearing all our Rice gear with pride. Finally when we say our son goes to Rice, people might have an idea where it's located. h00t!

jrn0-
Don't most people call it Sid Rich? Sounds like they shorten it down to "Sid". My office-mate was in Will Rice, and, I gather they don't shorten it to "Rice".

Serge has trouble with more than two syllables.

Here:

micMUHRtee

oops-- major typo-- (I dont looke when I type, Jen)-- my post was in response to yours. Sorry :)

i do have trouble with the "th" pronunciacion combined with "MC"...im foreign i cant help it.

excuse my ignorance, but isn't it MicMURRTree ?? No "th" and doesn't end in "tee"

Here in Texas, I think we'd pronounce that great Scots-Irish name "Muck MURR Tree". Shouldn't be too difficult to remember... same name as the author who wrote Brokeback Mountain and Lonesone Dove.

[/quote]
Are you sure that's an association you want to play up in Texas??

you dont wanna mention brokeback mountain at all....here...

serge-
I think I just said that....

Oh...Do I detect a little intolerance? How very unRice-like.

Well I'm sure Rice has no problem with it. Even Houston as a whole has little problem. It's the rest of the state that has an issue.
