MCS - Maths + CS Major / Minor

Hi,

a> Can someone who joins in MCS and indicated Maths as their choice, can they choose any of the offered programs for e.g Computational and Applied Math concentration or Statistics concentration? When is the earliest you can opt for the specific program. is their any selection process for picking a program within the list mentioned in the Maths website?

b> What is the procedure for choosing CS as a Minor? In what condition will they refuse?

c> What is the procedure for choosing CS as a Major? In what condition will they refuse?

Thanks for the response.

I do not go to CMU however, I am fairly knowledgeable about your topic. Yes, you can choose any of the math concentrations when you register for classes. There is not a selection process. The Discrete Math and Logic concentration requires the most CS classes as a requirement of the concentration. I think if you choose this concentration, you only have to take 2 additional CS classes to fulfill the requirements to receive a CS Minor.

To choose CS as a Major, you need to be admitted to the School of Computer Science (SCS). If you have not been admitted to SCS but have been admitted to MCS, you would need to enroll in MCS and transfer to SCS sometime after your freshman year. I do not know the procedure to do this. You would have to look at the CMU admissions website for transfer students or previous threads which discuss this. SCS is a highly sought after program and I would not count on being able to transfer.

@gr8advice thanks… i was looking at this link http://www.csd.cs.cmu.edu/academics/undergraduate/overview#minorexplore

where it talks about double major with a QPA requirement. Wanted to know someone in the campus how popular and easy is the double major. can someone assume that they can do double major if they get a minimum qpa requirement.
