My daughter will be attending in the fall. She's planning on living in the residence hall and we are looking for advice on meal plans. She eats very healthy but not alot. I am looking for suggestions on which plan, B or C?

Do they offer vegetarian options?

Plan B - 14 Meals Per Week: $1414* per semester $100 Meal Money + 2 Guest Passes: This plan is designed for those who want to eat an average of two meals a day on campus in the all-you-care-to-eat Dining Hall.

Plan C - 153 Meals Per Semester: $1414* per semester $100 Meal Money + 2 Guest Passes: This plan offers you the flexibility to eat when you want to eat in the all-you-care-to-eat Dining Hall. The meals can be used at any time during the semester but the average number of meals per week this plan is 9.

My D will be attending UTD in fall and we have yet to decide on a meal plan but we did eat in the dining hall when we visited and it seemed to me that there were a lot of vegetarian options. The food was quite good.

It would seem to me of the two plans that the better choice would be the 14 meals per week . I can’t see the advantage of the other plan unless she was going to be not eating at all for a period of days and then wanted to make up the meals she missed or if she wanted to take a friend regularly with her to lunch, which I think you can on the # of swipes per semester plan. I could be off but it seems to me that the 14 meals per week plan would work out to be 238 meals overall. Even if she doesn’t eat that much, as a parent I would like to see my daughter eating at least two good meals a day, and the 14 meal plan would foster that.

can’t offer any advice since i’ve never been on the meal plan. but a word of warning, the food there isnt too great, especially on the weekends. the dining hall hours used to be really weird, not sure if they changed it. that might also factor into how many meals you eat a week.

Take the 153 meals per semester. As mentioned before, you can swipe as many people as you want at one time, whereas you cannot swipe anyone but yourself if you take the 14 meals-per-week plan.

That said, I live in the apartments and took the cheapest meal plan (99 meals/semester). I still have 52 meals left and classes are already over. Food there is the same all the time, and unless you like everything soaked/fried liberally in oil you won’t really eat there much. I cook way more than I go there, and I’m a guy. Maybe once a month they’ll put out something good, but you can always count on finding salad, pizza, subs, corn, fries, and hamburgers there. And brussels sprouts.

Hours are terrible, too. They close at 9 during the week and close at 7 on the weekend. There’s a restaurant open next to the dining hall, but in my experience they’re always slow to get you your food. It is better than the dining hall food though, and they open until 10 (11?). After that, you’d have to walk about 30 minutes to the nearest restaurant.

You may have liked the dining hall food when you went, but if you went on the designated visiting day they probably made it seem better than it really is. I had the same impression the first time I went; never again.

Once in a blue moon…I don’t mind going to the dining hall. It’s almost like a scaled down “all you can eat buffet” that is terrible for your waistline. I can’t imagine eating there every day though…they have the same stuff every day…honestly my high school cafeteria kicked it’s butt by a factor of 20.
