Yesterday when my D ate her first meal in the Ratty (!) I thought this question would get answered, and it is really her question, not mine, but I am just curious: she is on the Flex 460 plan. How do eateries that accept both meal credits and points know which to charge on the Brown Card?

They charge meals at the Ratty, always. At Jos and the Gate they typically will assume it's a meal credit if the sum adds up to something that's approximately 1 credit or 2 credits. Typically anything in between or hard to tell they'll ask, but most students will mutter, "Points" or "credits" if it could go either way as they hand their card. Anything that's very small, they'll assume points unless otherwise specified.

The Ratty/VW will never take points unless you specify that.

Thanks, Jason!

another somewhat related question: is there a meal plan that just uses flex points and 2) if you go to ratty or v-dub, can u just use flex? Son is living in a house this year but is on meal plan and not using it too much. He does not want to give it up completely and feels he will use the Gate or some of the other eateries. But if he chooses to go to V-dub or Ratty and does not have plan with meal credits, can he just use points?

There is no meal plan with just flex points, yes you can use flex points at the Ratty or the VDub but it's way more expensive that way then as meals.

There is no way to go on less than the full meal plan and not spend an absurd amount of money per meal, unfortunately.
