Hey guys. I have several essays written out on various topics. One of my essays, the one that is the least personal, received the most praise. It is supposedly more entertaining and whatnot. My other essays are a little more serious and personal. But I just don't know which ones to use. I'm not a somber guy, but my Dad thinks my essays come off as depressing, which isn't what i meant at all. A few months ago, I wrote something entirely different for my counselor, and she also said my writing is depressing. But my English teacher says she likes my essays and they have a "dry wit" to em.

I am thoroughly confused.

Do you guys have any advice? And if any of you have time, it'd be great if you guys can look through an essay or two.

A witty essay can convey a piece of your personality, too. Just in a more subtle way that an essay in which you bear your heart out. I mean, if you can write a witty essay, that speaks for your sense of humor and intellect.

It is your choice, however, and I believe you are the only person who can really judge which essay speaks more for you as a person. I have a friend who values a more somber tone in essays whereas I appreciate humor. Tastes vary, so perhaps you may choose depending on the school, since some are known for “quirkiness” and others may enjoy “thought provoking.” However, a depressing essay would probably be better if it could adopt an inspiring tone… since no one really likes a debbie downer :)

I’d offer to read your essays, but I’m a senior and still working on some essays myself.
