The workload, resources, job prospects, and reputation of both schools for mechanical engineering are essentially the same. In certain fields, like artificial intelligence, CMU may be better. In others, like engineering physics, Cornell will be better. But for MechE, they are at the same level, and firms from all over the country recruit at both schools.

That said, Cornell obviously offers the aerospace minor, which is a REALLY cool program. There is currently a student-run team that is building a satellite that I think will actually be launched into space.

One of my roommates sophomore year was a MechE with an aerospace minor and loved the program. He is now getting his PhD at Caltech and working at JPL helping to design the next Mars Rover.

Here's a list of what MechEs go on to do:

So if you are really dead set on aerospace, go to Cornell. Otherwise, choose the school you will feel most comfortable at. CMU is in a great area of Pittsburgh -- more of an urban feel. And the engineering classes at CMU are pretty tight knit.

On the other hand, Cornell is in a small, but pretty neat collegetown with a lot of outdoor diversions. Cornell also offers a wider array of different things to on campus -- so if you think you are interested in following Division I sports or playing for the Marching Band or writing for a daily student newspaper, Cornell would be the place. Also, if you think you may end up switching to something other than engineering, Cornell would probably be the place too.

Cornell will also offer more of an on-campus social life with the fraternity system. CMU revolves more around the Forbes Avenue bars.

I'm biased, but you should come to Cornell. But if you like CMU, that might be the place to be.
