Mechanical engineering research as an undergrad

Hello I was wondering about research as an undergrad majoring in mechanical engineering. Currently I think I will be able to get a research position in laser&plasma diagnostics, but I wass looking at top 10 ME grad school programs but didn't see anything with laser in the research areas. So let's say I want to research nanotechnology during grad school, would it still be beneficial on an application to put laser&plasma diagnostic research? Does laser&plasma diagnostics fit under any of these categories? acoustics and noise control, bioengineering, combustion, design, fluid mechanics and propulsion, heat transfer, heating ventilating air conditioning and refrigeration, manufacturing and materials processing, mechanics and vibration, nanotechnology, and systems measurement and control
