I am not sure of whether I want to do mechanical or aerospace engineering, but I do know that when I graduate I want to get a job in the aerospace field. If I were to do aerospace I would go to Ohio State University and if I were to do mechanical I would go to Otterbein University or maybe OSU(I have been admitted to both schools). Would anyone with experience in either of these fields know if I would still have a good chance at getting a job in the aerospace field if I got a mechanical engineering degree instead of an aerospace degree?
If you want to work in the aerospace field get an aerospace degree. Not saying it would be impossible to work in the aerospace field with a mechanical degree, but…
Each engineering discipline is specialized. There is significant cross over but in a competitive market you should have the appropriate degree for the job you seek.
(And ftr. I am a civil engineer and my best friend is an aerospace engineer).
My dad is an aerospace engineer (builds satellites) so I asked him your question! He recommends a core engineering like mechanical over aero but it also depends on the aero program. He said his company has lots of aerpspace engineers but the number non-aero engineers is far greater (mechanical, electrical, material sciences, software, etc.). You don’t have to be an aerospace engineer to work in the field.
