Hi everyone! I am a female interested in engineering, and I am considering both mechanical and electrical engineering. The research I am pursuing is at the intersection of both- and I find both equally interesting. Which major is easier to get into at top schools? Also how are the career prospects for both? Thanks!!
I am not sure what being female has to do with your question. The bottom line is that admission is not harder for either of them. Different schools have different policies, of course, so at an individual school one might have a lower acceptance rate than the other, but there’s no general rule.
Career prospects for both are great. Go with the one that interests you more. Good luck!
I think Electrical is more challenging according to my husband, my roommate from college and other people I know. If you are an engineer and are female, I think the sky is the limit if you have decent grades as it is still a mostly male field. Either one is great but my roommate hated thermo whatever that is…
“The research I am pursuing is at the intersection of both” - If you give us more detail, we can give more helpful feedback.
Which is more challenging, and which is harder to get into and/or complete varies by institution, and is also very subjective. For some people mechanics doesn’t click as well as E&M (although EE is much more than just E&M), whereas for others it may be vice versa.
By “intersection of both”, I want to assume that you mean something like controls, robotics, or mechatronics. In that case, when you are in college, take the gateway courses for both majors in your sophomore year, and then choose the one you are more willing to study in depth as your major. As for the other, just take some additional coursework in that discipline.
