Perhaps recent med school applicants can help:

A student I know is on the waitlist at a med school. Is there a May 1 deadline for which students can only hold one place at a medical school? If so, I expect there may be some reshuffling and movement from waiting lists in the next couple of weeks. Was that something you experienced or observed among your college classmates, or are admissions off w.l. generally offered on a rolling basis? Wasn't sure how to answer query.

Yes, but the date is May 15th. Waitlists are extremely active in the first few days after that -- almost all the waitlist admits I know of (and there are a lot of them) happen within a week.

Thanks BDM. Will let student know. He apparently has not been admitted to med school yet. I presume if he doesn't get off the waitlist by the end of May, he probably should re-apply.

While the overwhelming majority of movement will occur by the end of May, there's still a chance as the summer progresses. I know of at least 3 admits (2 medical school, 1 dental) that occurred after August 1st. The dental school admit occurred after the first week of school ended. Certainly he needs to judge what he knows about his position on the waitlist and as objectively as possible decide how likely he is to get in from that point.

In other words, he still needs to be preparing for reapplication, but waiting just a couple of weeks wouldn't be a horrible idea and might save the cost of reapplying.
