Medical coverage from college

I have been reading another thread and realize that it will be cheaper for us if I were to get DD covered by her college. She will be freshman in the fall. I looked into some of the colleges she is interested in, the college begins the coverage in either July and Aug, therefore technically she can get her coverage before she registers for classes. Is it possible? How can she get her insurance card? I know I can ask for the college after she decides to enroll, but I thought some parents here may know.

We put our S on his own college coverage and have removed him from ours. He can buy the coverage year-round. He plans to live away from our home state, so having the old coverage did not help much. His new college coverage is said to operate nation-wide. When I learned that by talking to the insurance guy, I asked if I could buy that plan for me, too. He laughed nicely and said it was only the student plan. S emailed or filled out some request form online and got a card in the mail after he was on that plan.

^^yes, after reading what the college offers, I even planned to enroll to get the same coverage LOL but after calculating the 12 credits, I think it is not that much cheaper for me.

My question is on the July or Aug before the student actually enrolls, how will the student get coverage and the medical card? I can’t ask the college now as I do not know which college she will enroll in.

We had a situation with our daughter for grad school in which she was covered by the school but we couldn’t get the insurance card or any information as the medical coverage plan was changing until mid-September. It was a problem as she woke up one Saturday morning with conjunctivitis, needed a prescription but the campus health center had limited hours. No where to go… our pediatrician’s office in NY called in a prescription without seeing her as she was over 21 and in a different state. Had to pay full price at pharmacist but was reimbursed once the insurance kicked in and she submitted the documentation.

We have kept our daughter’s on our health insurance, even though one of them is also covered by her universities’ health insurance plan.

My kid couldn’t get her enrollment info from her grad school until she registered for classes, but her coverage was retroactive until Aug 1. That has risks in case the student has an accident or something that prevents registering.

I didn’t sign my D up for the college plan till Jan. of her freshman year. I’m pretty sure I was able to download her card online while she was home for Christmas break. Her plan never provided anything hard copy.

I’m sure this varies by college. When you know where she’ll be attending you can contact that college for details.

I still keep her on my plan because if I drop her I can never put her back on. Her college plan is primary (even though all the literature and even the college itself said it would be secondary).
