I've been hearing some things about MIT students going on medical leave for social issues and how MIT isnt dealing with this very well..any thoughts? How many students go on medical leave?

For social issues?

I went on medical leave and know a handful of other people who have. It’s not common, but it happens :)

piperXP: would mind telling me why you went on medical leave? you can PM me if you want, or if its too personal you can just not answer.

Spring term, two big things happened:
- I was [physically] sick and it took over a term for Medical to figure out why.
- My dad had an emergency quadruple-bypass surgery when they figured out that his artery was 98% blocked during an attempted angioplasty and they had no idea how he could still be alive.

I decided after that I’d just go home and get everything sorted out :D

oh I’m sorry, I hope you’re dad is okay :)

Piper has it right.

I haven’t heard of MIT having big problems with medical leave or people abusing medical leave. However, MIT does want to make sure that people are not taking medical leave solely because they were about to fail out anyway and it’s easier to get readmitted from medical than academic leave. You need an actual medical reason (which can include mental health reasons).
