How intense and competitive is the pre-med track at UNC? Also, is UNC’s medical school any good?
UNCs medical school is very good. Getting into any medical school in the country is an honor…they are all good.
In my opinion the intensity and competitive feel of the premed track will depend on the student. You may get different responses depending on who you ask.
Agreed, it’s unusual to get to pick your medical school. You go where you get in…
Getting into even one med school is an honor. All med schools are excellent and held to the same standards.
Only 40% students who survived weedout (so, fewer than 10% pre-meds) make it.
Surviving that track at UNC Chapel Hill is not easy. It means hitting the ground running*, having a strong background in chemistry as well as Biology, physics, and math, being able to rank top 10% in English, communication, sociology, psychology, a diversity-focused course, and top 20% in every science class (ie., Top 20% in chemistry against chemistry majors, in biology against Biology majors, in physics against physics majors…)
It helps if you took AP chemistry, AP Physics 1+2, AP biology, AP calculus AB.
- While fellow freshmen will go out to party, you’ll be staying in making sure you know everything 100% right off the bat. Most freshmen take it easy their first 2-3 weeks, but pre-meds can’t, and either they figure it out quickly or they’re already behind.
Sorry y’all, I’m a senior in HS and I have no idea about the application process to get into medical school besides taking the MCAT.
@MYOS1634 I want to go to UNC for pre-med. I’ve taken h. chem, h. bio and did really well in those. Out of the classes you’ve listed, I’ve only taken AP Calc AB and passed (with a B overall and a 3 on the exam) I’m currently taking AP Biology and I’m doing okay, but it was a little shaky at first. Should I be worried?
Do you live in NC? What other schools did you apply to?
@twogirls yes I live in nc. I applied here, wake forest, Davidson, unc charlotte, and uncg
Ok … best of luck to you. My advice to you is to hit the ground running and keep your grades up. Once you get acclimated you can begin looking for volunteer positions etc that you will also need. Once again… good luck!
@hotmess2019 Worrying gets you nowhere. With a 3, you’ll probably have to retake Calc. If you get in, you work your tail off, and pray that’s enough!
