I would appreciate recommendations and chances so much! Willing to chance back (:
P.S. idk if this is legacy but sister goes to MIT?

any replies please?

MIT does not consider legacy, and your sister’s going to MIT does not count as legacy anyway. You have a decent chance at the UC’s, but your lowish GPA might get you denied. Regardless, apply to all of them. Brown is a reach, but I think you can get in. You will probably get into most, if not all, of Gerogetown, NYU, CMU, Illinois.

Well, you’re not gonna make it to Brown with that kind of gpa. And your ECs aren’t anything great. You should do just fine at a Uc. IMO, Brown ED is a waste of an ED. A, at Brown it isn’t gonna offer much of an advantage and B, it’s probably to high of a reach to even bother. ED somewhere where you might have a more realistic chance of getting in with the ED boost.

ECs are actually a lot better than most of the kids who post on CC with high scores; at least his ECs are just “Math Club” and NHS! Some kids seriously think they can get into top schools with only those ECs. OP isn’t in such a bad spot with his.

GPA is the only thing holding you back, and you know it. Kiss the top tier UCs goodbye; UCs only care about numbers and over 50% of Cal and UCLA admits had 4.0+ W/UC GPAs.

UCSD - Likely rejection, but who knows
UCLA - rejection
UCSB - possible acceptance
UCD - acceptance
USC - Your GPA will hold you back. Write an AMAZING essay and you could get in for fall; likely spring admit or rejection though
Brown (ED) - rejection (GPA)
Carnegie Mellon (Computer Science) - likely rejection
Georgetown - possible acceptance
NYU - acceptance
Illinois - possible acceptance

You need to poke around at some schools where your GPA won’t be so frowned upon. UT Austin or U Washington might be good matches since you’re into math and science. I’d also look at UCSC and UCI.

Brown is super unlikely, but I think you won’t be shooting blindly if you applied to USC and similar privates; you are more likely to convince them of your ability to succeed than you will the numbers-focused UCLA.

thanks so much. i fricken hate myself for the GPA crap but whatever. whats done is done

I’d agree with the UWashington suggestion. Definitely a match. UT might be a bit of a reach, because of it’s ridiculous top 9% rule. Also consider adding the University of Rochester, Tufts, and maybe Boston University (since you like NYU) to your list.

Case Western might be worth a look also. Best of luck!

UCSD - Target
UCLA - Target
UCSB - High Target
UCD - Target
USC - High Target
Brown (ED) - Reach
Carnegie Mellon (Computer Science) - Reach
Georgetown - High Target
NYU - Mid/High Target
Illinois - Target

Good luck!

bump. i was wondering what my chances would be if i instead applied to duke ED? as opposed to brown ED

Do you know what your rank is? Or does your school not rank?

school doesnt rank :/

^^ lexieam; Just curious

What is “target” and “High target”, and how come UCD, UCSD, and UCLA are equal in that regard? And UCSB and USC equal?

OP, is “W 10-12: 3.98” your UCGPA? That’s way better than mediocre, even if it’s not top 1 percent.

And have you seen these 2010 freshman profiles?

thank you!

@shrinkrap waht do you mean UCGPA? Thats my weight GPA for sophomore + jr year.

UC GPA has a formula that includes A-G’s in 10th and 11th, and weights AP’s and approved honors, but with a cap. Probably the same thing for you, but several of my kids classes didn’t count.

I only know one MIT alumnus, and he graduated many years ago. Regardless of whether or not they consider legacies, I can say people definitely have better shots at getting into really good schools where their siblings have succeeded. When I visited Princeton, the tour guide said he had 3 sisters who had already attended the university. I don’t believe in many coincidences in the first place, and it seems like it would be EXTREMELY lucky for 4 siblings to get into a place with an 8.8% acceptance rate. I think that could give you a leg up. Chance me back at
“Chance me and i’ll ReChance you”

Well since you’re “mediocre,” you won’t be going to any of those schools.

Im sure you have a chance!!! Good luck :)
