Meliora weekend 2015

I am going to brave the crowds and visit my S for parents weekend. As it is parents weekend and alumni weekend both, is it as busy as it would seem? Any words of wisdom concerning parking, restaurants, etc? I am staying in Henrietta and am most concerned about parking on campus. Thanks!

We never attended during D’s 4 yrs at UR (too far away), but at the time many said here on CC that Meliora weekend is surprisingly not a zoo, despite the alumni/parents/homecoming convergence of events. UR has acres of lots that can fit everyone during graduation, so there should be enough parking for Meliora.

As for restaurants, not knowing your interests, my favorites are Dinosaur BBQ (of course, but it really is that good) and the much more local experience of Sticky Lips BBQ, The Owl House - which has a lot of vegetarian options, and the Rochester classic Dogtown, which is a little place with pictures of peoples’ dogs on the walls that serves creative hot dogs (including a veggie dog) for very little $$. There are of course upscale restaurants.

Will second Sticky Lips. We’re just finishing visiting middle son over his fall break and that was the pick from him and his friends. They’ve been to both as different parents prefer one option or the other, but Sticky Lips definitely wins with him. (We’ve tried both and agree with him, but let him choose.) There are also other options around that he takes us too - a Greek restaurant, an Indian restaurant, a Thai restaurant and a cute sandwich shop, but my memory doesn’t recall their names and he’s still sleeping… Oh, Tully’s is also a place they like - a sports bar with decent food options.

When in doubt, ask your student or their friends. That’s how my guy found all of his gems. Granted, he’s a senior now, but he’s also an RA and shares his favorite haunts with his freshmen each year.

Thanks!

Is there a Tully’s in Rochester? We ate at the Syracuse Tully’s and their buffalo chicken was the best I’ve eaten.

The Tully’s we go to is in Henrietta - just south of Rochester. It’s right along the main restaurant row there.

Thanks Creekland, Tully’s in Henrietta must be fairly new–D graduated 4 yrs ago and don’t remember it. Then again, every restaurant known to man (except my favorite, Dinosaur BBQ) can be found in Henrietta.

This may be a bit after the fact but we never had a problem with parking on campus during Mel Weekend. As for restaurants, in addition to Dinosaur we also always went to East Avenue and had lunch at Magnolia’s. For dinner we have also enjoyed 2 Vine and Max at Eastman Place and Bamba Bistro. Mount Hope Diner and Highland Park Diner were the breakfast places. It was d’s five year reunion but neither she or any of her friends made it up there, either too busy to get away or to expensive to travel there.

Just checking into say it was a great weekend. The weather was wonderful! Close parking was not plentiful, but spots were to be found in the farthest regions of campus. We participated in only a few of the organized events-some were quite crowded. It was wonderful to see my S in his new ‘home’ and to meet his new friends.

As for restaurants, we ate at Sticky Lips one night. We tried to go to Dinosaur BBQ first, but there was an hour wait. Sticky lips was great, and they had a decent band playing. Sunday morning we attempted to eat at Harvest Cafe in Corn Hill landing across the river, but after 1 hour our food still had not arrived and we had a jazz concert to catch. The menu did look very good, though. I will check out all the great recommendations for food during future visits.

Glad you had a good time!
