I just got a "Word Power" workbook thing from my Speed Reading Class. It basically gives you a root and then has 6 or so words that involve that root. Do you think it would be a waste of time using this book because it involves word roots?

"memorizing" anything is a waste of your time. The best bet is just doing lots of practice tests... there's a real art to answering standardized test questions. And the ancient greeks aren't going to teach you that art. So go get a copy of Cracking the SAT and... you know... get cracking

Gosh, I'm so glad I joined this forum. That was some really great advice Sreis and TwinkleToes. Again, thank you so much for the support. After reading previous posts on this forum, I've always felt discouraged. Now I feel like I really have a chance. You guys are right, I'll aim high. What have I got to lose?

I think I'm going to try grammatix soon. I was always "iffy" about it but I really value your opinion, Sreis. Did someone you know really go from a 1950 to a 2340 in two weeks? And this was practicing with grammatix and other workbooks?

TwinkleToes, that tip about circling the words that summarize the main idea about the passage was very helpful. What I did was write out what I THOUGHT each paragraph meant. I guess I thought I was doing what you said, but I see the difference now. Also, since vocab is crucial, do you think it would be wise to memorize vocabulary words from the PR book (in addition to studying of course) even though people do tend to agree that memorization is a waste of time? Also, with the joe bloggs technique. I tried that and it did work for me, but sometimes I couldn't tell what the hardest/weirdest word was because I couldn't tell what was the hardest/weirdest word (sometimes it seemed like none of them were, but I still didn't know what they meant). I know there's probably not much you can tell me there. Maybe practice will help me be more proficient at it.

I'll definately ask questions about the questions I miss. Although it'll make me feel very stupid, lol, I'll suck it up because it'll be good for me.

Thanks again everyone.
