mens rowing for average student, chances?

6.0, 160, GPA 3.3, ACT 26. 2K time 6.56.7 Senior in highly competitive public HS - Dyslexic, Dysgraphic DX in elementary.

My son is entering his fourth year of HS rowing as a senior. Loves crew, non traditional learner and student.

Has put crew on the back burner as far as pursuing it in college feeling that grades were not strong enough, but I hate for him to not even attempt it. Is in Texas, interested in anything. varsity or decent club. Schools like Gonzaga and Sewanee come to mind…know that many are out due to grade requirements.

ADVICE?? Do we need a recruiter? Is it too late? Help! Please, just feeling anxious that we haven’t attempted this as thought it would be impossible without stronger academics.

Many thanks, mom

What does he want to study? Does he want to be at a big state school or a smaller school?

I’d look at some of the schools that have rowing and see if he’d fit in academically (I think he looks fine) and as part of the team, then see if the school has the academic program he’s interested in. I don’t think you are too late, but if you are looking for an athlete scholarship or admissions help, it’s time to make contact and see what is available.

not expecting scholarships, just admission! he is an engineering type. or business, but not at a brain crunching school. if that makes sense. overwhelmed…thanks

Looked up one school’s club page, and they had “Who we compete against”

Auburn University, University of Alabama, Berry College, University of Central Florida, University of Charleston, Clemson University, Duke University, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, Emory University, University of Florida, Florida Institute of Technology, Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia State University, University of Georgia, Jacksonville University, University of Louisville, LSU, N.C. State University, Marietta College, Murray State University, University of North Carolina, Northwestern State University (LA), Nova Southeastern University, Purdue University, Rollins College, University of Tampa, University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, University of Tennessee-Knoxville, University of Texas, Tulane University, Vanderbilt University, University of Virginia, Washington University, Virgina Tech, Wake Forest University.
I’d guess that Louisville, U Tenn Chattanooga, U Alabama Huntsville (the club which I quoted here), might be worth a look, but candidly I’m not familiar with most of these.

Men’s teams may all be considered ‘club’ because it is not an NCAA sport. Most of the schools listed above have varsity teams and I don’t think they have a second club level team. I’m not sure how they do scholarships. They compete across D1,D2,D3, club lines.

OP’s son’s scores and grades would be competitive at many of these schools.

Men’s collegiate rowing is not NCAA spirt and you will find you will not get $$$ to attend but…you do get admissions support if they want you. Less pull in that regards for club teams.
Most schools can only offer need base and/or merit based scholarships/financial aid to varsity rowing recruits.

Also check out University of San Diego and Santa Clara University…smaller schools with support for different learners.
