Hello ! i know it is taboo to write about mental health in college essays, i know not to write a sob story and make them believe that i am a danger to be on campus. Is it okay to write about how my eating disorder shaped me to be who i am today and helped me find what career i’m interested in? I want to explain how i overcame that challenge in a lighthearted yet vulnerable way.
I do not think it is a good idea. Colleges will be leery of students with eating disorders. I would pick a different topic.
I agree with @MaineLonghorn .
While it does seem like that issue is in the past, it may colleges resident of accepting someone who may not take care of themselves (I’m aware that isn’t really how having ED is, but it can be perceived that way). It indicates the possibility for other mental illnesses.
However, it is awesome that you were able to overcome that! I am so proud of you! I know that it can’t be easy.
Nope. Find something else. 10000% no
Risky topic, but it really depends upon the execution.
If motivated to write on this topic, then write it & have an experienced adult reader review / critique your work.
P.S. Could be relevant to one who plans to major in philosophy / religion, psychology, counseling or nutrition. Nevertheless, still a risky topic which should be critiqued by an experienced, trusted adult before submitting it as part of one’s college application.
I am also in the “no” camp, unless you are truly an exceptional writer with a distinctive voice. But my main concern is that college brings pressures that you have not yet experienced. These pressures can trigger relapses of pre existing mental health conditions. Ad coms know this and this is why experienced parents and other experts don’t recommend writing about a mental health issue even if you have overcome it. Schools just don’t want the liability.
I don’t care how you write it. Still no.
The point of a college essay is: 1) to tell something about yourself that can’t be found elsewhere on the application AND 2) to make admissions officers want to have you on campus. Unfortunately I think writing about overcoming an eating disorder could raise more red flags than give reasons for a college to want you on campus. But in the end it is your essay and your decision.
