Hi, I am applying to some Master of Engineering Programs in Civil Engineering (Structural Emphasis) and was wondering if you should still mention research interests in the statement of purpose. M. Eng programs typically are less geared towards research. I have already submitted a SOP mentioning research interests but now I am not too sure if I should have.

IMO, if there's a spot in another part of the application that requires you to fill out research/employment information and allows you to be somewhat detailed, then it's redundant to add it into your SOP. However, it should at least be acknowledged as it's probably a major part of your decision to attend graduate school.

Additionally, if your resume talks a lot about research and you are able to upload one, this could be another reason for you to obviate the need to mention it in your SOP.

Although, if neither of these are even remotely an option, then yes, mention your research more thoroughly.

This is also just my opinion. SOPs are made such that there is little guidance and it's possible that everyone can have their own unique way of writing.
