Mentoring

I'm really interested in volunteering as a mentor or something to that effect when I attend Stanford. However, I would prefer to work with inner-city or low-income kids. Are there any organizations, either by Stanford or third-parties, that are involved like this? I know Big Brothers Big Sisters is the only mentoring organization where I live. Also, are there any high schools near Stanford? I know Palo Alto High School is right there, but I hear it's a top ranked high school.

Thanks!

There are! the Haas center has fellowships/community service opportunities and they also have summer fellowships/fellowship projects as well. I think there are a couple specifically geared towards education as well for work study. East Palo Alto is not that great of an area so a lot of Stanford students are involved in education in that area. Also, there are a TON of community service activities available… just go out to the activities fair in White Plaza and there is no shortage of organizations available.

If you’re interested in teaching, there’s a fantastic program called F4Ed - Foundations for Education. It’s an afterschool program where Stanford students teach/tutor kids at local elementary schools.

There is a Gunn High school (public) and a Castelleja (this one is all girls) high school (both are prestigious)near by but the best bet is to contact haas center
