Merit Scholarship

So I went to USC this past weekend to interview for the Presidential Scholarships (woo), but I was really nervous. Before my interview I realized that I would never be able to go to my dream school (USC) since its so expensive, especially with the tuition increase. I stuttered a few times, said “umm” and “like” more that I would like/more than I usually do, and my answers were on the short side since I was nervous (I blanked out on the names of things I wanted to do or even forgot to mention them… like I forgot to talk about two clubs I wanted to join so I just listed one). Am I going to lose the scholarship and my chances of going are gone? Please be honest with me. How bad did I have to do to lost the scholarship, and was I that bad? Thank you for your honesty.

They.know most, if not all the candidates we feeling nervous and feeling similar pressure from similar dependency on winning the scholarship to enable them to attend. Don’t dwell on it since there is nothing you can do about it now.

Eh, I got the Trustee last year and I thought my interview was pretty mediocre. Don’t worry about it.

@ThisOneKid I hope we have similar definitions of mediocre ahah… I really want/need this. Thank you!

Congratulations to other recipients. For those that did not receive their nominated Trustee or President Szcholarship, don’t let it define you, everyone should be proud of their accomplishments that will most certainly carry you far.

To make it easier for googling info next year.
When will USCTrustee and Presidents Scholarship be announced?
Answer: The Friday morning prior to Regular Decision (RD) acceptance results announcements, typically falling around March 18-21. In 2016, they were posted by 4:30am Pacific time, and 6:30am Pacific in 2015. These times are based off of first postings on cc or my child’s as seen in the USC portal.

Thanks for the tip about Friday morning prior to RD acceptance for scholarship results. We checked my daughter’s YouSC portal and the good news was waiting for her in a March 18 pdf letter this morning! She got the Trustee Scholarship and super-excited.

Sincere congratulations to your daughter! I am sure your family is proud of her accomplishments.

Has anyone from the last Explore date not received any word back from the university about scholarships?

@“Georgia Girl” Thank you for your well wishes!

@nearea Have you checked the portal? My daughter did not get any email notification from USC about the scholarship, so that’s why I was grateful for the tip here at CC to check the portal Friday morning. Otherwise we would never have known to do so. I expect that she’ll receive something official through regular mail next week.

edragonfly,

It is always a happy day when a student receives such a high honor. After eight years of volunteering on this forum some of the best days are when good news is posted and students are rewarded for their years of hard work.

@edragonfly yep! I have checked the portal and there is nothing there

Around campus and by the administration, can anyone elaborate on any extra curriculum, programs, sponsorships, etc that are provoded to the Top Scholar (Trustee, Mork, Stamps, Pres) recipients that are harder for non-recipients to attain ? Or is it 99.9% the monetary award?

SoProudofMyChildren, the distinction of Trustee/Pres, et al is not overt on campus. All go-getter students get their pick of opportunities. One of my sons’ programs offered the chance to travel to the Netherlands for 2 weeks (all expenses paid by USC and sponsors) that was open to all in their major but they did have to apply, write a proposal, etc. There are many many special programs and they are open to all. However, it may be that the top merit winners are exactly the sorts of students who tend to work that extra effort to snag some of these prizes, which–frankly–is one big reason USC wants them in the first place. They are the leaders and they want to excel. OTOH, I have one child at USC who did not get a top merit, and he had just as many opportunities and, in fact, won many distinctions that came with monetary prizes–he just happens to be the driven sort, too. Around campus, no one really knows who the merit kids are except those who live in Birnkrant and that’s freshman year.

As I thought @madbean. Thank you.
