Merit Scholarships for Music Majors (reported by School)

@albertsax - yeah!!! Congrats!!! Our eldest goes to USC (the SC one  There is a flute mamma on here whose daughter is also looking at USC.

University of Richmond - $10k a year music Scholarship.

@lxbux64 how did you find that out? email? letter?

@Propinquity4444 - my son found out about Richmond music Scholarship via email on 3/25.

A member just reported that a bassoonist received the Stamps Scholarship at University of Miami-Stamps. That’s full tuition, room and board for four years! Congrats!!!

@tripletmama I am a bassoonist mom. WOW about the Stamps Scholarship at University of Miami-Stamps! Just WOW.

That’s amazing! The Stamps scholarship is such a weird one at Frost because of the way it rotates around. You not only have to be the best on your instrument, you have to be applying in the year that your instrument is eligible for the award. I think it’s on a 4 year cycle right? So there is only one Stamps ensemble of each type in the school at a time?

One of our members (who wishes to remain anonymous for now) just received a $30k scholarship to Blair at Vanderbilt!!! (after receiving much less from other places) Yeah!!! I love hearing these stories - warms my heart.

@DrummerDad18 Does the Stamps only rotate like that (with an eligible instrument) at Frost? Or is this a year for woodwinds everywhere, for example??

In S’s year of jazz Stamps at Frost, a great candidate graduating from high school from the year before had made a deal in advance to hold off his Frost admission for a year to come in his next year as a freshman with the jazz Stamps.

Just wanted to add that we have had a few $25k, $35k and even $45k awards reported from USC Thornton this year!! Congrats everyone!

A guitar scholarship for $10k a year was reported by a guitarist for Michigan.

Everyone - please keep reporting here (or DM me if you want to remain anonymous) and I’ll summarize when the flurry of activity is over.

@tripletmama Are the awards you are tracking strictly music awards?

I can track both if you post them - or DM me. Might be interesting to see the combo ones.

Oberlin Merit Award (anonymous)
Orchestral Instrumentalist - $28K Year - Conservatory Dean’s Scholarship

Northwestern/Bienen. (anonymous info). My son’s best friend got in to Bienen last year with $0. He was able to capitalize on a $15k offer and a $20k offer from Frost and USC/Thornton to turn $0 into $20k at Northwestern. And this is from a school which is on the record saying they do not give much if any merit money.

@tripletmama I was just wondering if (for example) when you post $25, $35 and $45K for USC - is it possible those include other scholarships (like the Presidential which would be about $25K and not solely MUSIC merit as I understand it.) Are kids getting 25-35-45K in music merit on top of those scholarships?

Just trying to help a future reader with a kid maybe hoping to get into USC by the skin of their teeth academically, know if 45K is “possible” on strictly music talent? USC seems to be one that kids cut from their list early because of either financial or academic admit improbabilities. So, this is really helpful info.

My kid’s a college junior. Makes no difference to me! Ha ha! Although she did not apply to USC because it seemed it would be financially out of reach.

@dbandmom - very good point!!! I had no idea that the Presidential Award wasn’t music. Interesting. For those that got that award - can you clarify? Thanks so much. And let’s try to clarify with any scholarships what is music vs. academic vs. need. That would be very useful information to know. When I do a summary list I will also try to include COA as everything is relative. Sure wish we had this kind of list this year! (would be helpful to set expectations and possibilities).

My S just received scholarship letter from SFCM and he is receiving $30k each year for 4 years. He was very depressed after getting rejected from USC and Rice so I am happy for this result. Still waiting for Indiana offer to come.
