@coloraturadad yes, I think my S missed the RS deadline:( Thanks for reminding me of that, it was awhile ago and I forgot. UR gave him $$, but not talent money, so that info caught my eye. Congrats to that VP student!

@Propinquity4444 Frost combines everything into one, from what they said at audition day. My son received what they call a music scholarship. They don’t separate academic from music merit. Talent is considered merit. I hope that helps.

Wow!!! This is crazy helpful. Happy to see the range!
Here’s offers I’m aware of from our high school music program:
SFCM: Jazz Bass $30K, Jazz Trumpet $25K
USC Thornton: Jazz Trumpet $25K, Jazz Trumpet $25K + $14K academic (deans scholarship)
I could add $25,000 scholarship to Clive Davis Institute, Tisch, NYU
@Britmom5 - congrats!!! What instrument, genre?
I wish I could figure out how to PM this, but ds was fortunate to be awarded a Frost School Music $50,000 scholarship in Music Engineering (MUE).
@redsoxmama THAT IS AMAZING! Congrats!
@tripletmama and @“Mezzo’sMama” This merit thread has been SO helpful (if partly to see how difficult it seems to predict!) but I was wondering: Has anyone done a similar thread in past years focused on scholarships? I’ve searched and haven’t found it… but there is a lot here and I may simply have missed it. Thank you again for the wonderful threads you have shepherded!
Yes @khill87, its been done before. Here are a few links. These are old but served the same purpose in determining which schools have/had generous awards in the past. I agree you cannot take these numbers as predictors. There are too many variables considered for the awards.

I wonder if a net price list would be helpful, In particular, a non-need np (disregarding financial aid).
So, for example: School A (with Tuition, Room and Board Price of $50,000) offered combined academic and music aid to bring price down to $30,000 before financial aid grants, loans and work-study were applied: non-need-based net price. $50,000- $20,000 = $30,000 NNNP.
School B costs $24,000 and awarded $3000 combined academic and music merit aid: $24000-$3000 = $21000 NNNP
School C at $67000 offered $28000 in combined academic and music merit aid. $67000-$28000 = $39000 NNNP
And School D at $48000 offered $27000 in combined academic and merit aid ($48000-$27000=$21000 NNNP)
School A is 30k, School B 21k, School C 39k & School D $21k, and can be compared on cost.
The financial aid picture may still differ significantly, of course. For us, aid was relatively similar at 3 of 4 institutions.
And each family will have to decide how important cost is relative to other factors.
In my D’s case, distance, atmosphere, dual major and faculty trumped conservatory reputation. Cost was a factor but not the ultimate decider.
(Numbers in this post are fictitious examples and do not correspond to my family’s results.)
@“Pikachu’s Mom” that makes sense. Here’s ours for Loyola University New Orleans (Popular and Commercial Music Program-vocal.)
Cost $53,700
Initial Combined Academic Grants/Scholarships = $29,000
Additional Grant after appeal = $3000
Total Grants/Scholarships = $31,000
Net Price before financial aid = $22,700
@Pickachu’s Mom - I think your numbers are a really good starting point for people thinking about the financing over the summer. Your school A through D offers seem very reasonable assuming a large pool with public, private, LACs.
I mention this bc when you start you will often hear that there’s lot of money! And then you think maybe your kid will go to school for FREE (not realizing that that’s often tuition and doesn’t include room and board). So to be safe, I’ve often said to consider the tuition (plus room and board) for your public school as a mid-point and then add and deduct $5000 up to $10,000 to get a realistic range.
Note that this is only a starting point. It will get you over the bump of thinking in extremes (i.e., college may be FREE or $70,000/year). You should be able to get a few offers in the middle with good school selection and competitive talent.
Then you can “layer” in other considerations that may bring the price tag down at some schools:
High Academics - may produce higher merit including full tuition
Special Talent - everyone has high talent - but maybe just maybe you will be “special” or particularly needed for the next year.
Financial Aid - knowing which schools meet full need etc can really make a difference for some students
So summer is a great time to be drilling down on schools to figure out where your grades, test scores and/or financial situation may be “most respected”.
