Merit Scholarships

@charlixcx @thesolesurvivors Do you guys mind if I ask what ethnicity and gender you are?

Son is disappointed with no merit scholarshipā€¦He is OOS and living outside of USA.
His stats 1520 SAT and 38/42 IB. Letā€™s hope other colleges he is waiting would give some much needed merit scholarships

White male!

So my DS got the Gator Nation Scholarship and is very excited. However, all the visit opportunities for accepted students are full (including the waiting list). How is it possible that there are not enough events for all the accepted students? This leaves me with a terrible feeling. What other events for the net 4 years will my DS be shut out from? What about classes? What if he canā€™t get in and then not graduate on time? This is my 3rd child going through the process and we have never been shut out from an accepted student day. Shame on you, UF!

Did I have to apply before the priority deadline to be considered for Merit? I applied in early January and I thought I would be competitive for Merritt scholarships. Did anyone apply after Nov 1 and get merit scholarships?

@hockey731 UF website (https://admissions.ufl.edu/afford/scholarships) is very clear about the need to apply by the November 1 priority deadline to be considered for merit scholarships.

They have to make a cutoff sometime in order to have a defined pool to choose from.

The only one I am aware of that you donā€™t have to apply by November 1 is the NMF scholarship and Benacquisto

@twinmommy Besides the $500 annual scholarship, UF does not administer the NMF or Benacquisto scholarships. Those are administered by the State Department of Education (Benacquisto) and National Merit Corporation.

It is surprising that there is no mention of any scholarship for my DD (including Benacquisto)- listed UF as the first choice in the NMF application. We are in-state and wondering if it will be in the next batch!! Fingers crossed!

Thanks @Mom2NND @Melissa96 @twinmommy

@charlixcx My son had similar stats and received the Platinum, URSP & National Merit scholarships. They all stack. Probably the best merit scholarship in the country for any in-state student. Last year 21 students received this offer from UF but only 3 students accepted this offer which is quite surprising given that UF is the 8th ranked public school in the country. Last year my son and 3 of his friends at school received similar offers but all chose to go out of state without any scholarships to (Berkeley, UCLA, UT & Yale) computer science programs. UF is a great school but apparently some of the departments (Computer Science) are not offering the quality education of a #8 ranked institution. UF admission was the hardest to turn down for my son despite getting accepted to computer science programs @ Berkeley, Urbana, Georgia Tech, UT. I am sure that UF being a great school is aware of these issues and will soon raise the ranking of the computer science department to a level which will attract the best students to remain in Florida.

The Benacquisto Sch was posted on my DDā€™s UF portal last night.

Did she select uf by March 1?

For the Benacquisto does anyone know where it will show OOS waiver for UF?

Iā€™m starting to worry that Benacquisto - at least for OOS students - could be impacted by the coming recession/depression. Not trying to cause alarm, but I think itā€™s prudent for families considering or already committed to maybe contact the school and request some kind of assurances? DS21 is only a junior so we have the luxury of time that seniors do not have, and my heart goes out to you all for the stress this must be causing. Sending positive vibes to all of you!

@twinmommy Yes, she applied before Nov. 1 and selected uf as 1st choice in Feb.

@SRKmomā€¦ Feel proud! Please take a breather. All the accepted tours have been pretty much canceled. Even if you were able to book one (first come first serve) Uf is not the only school. All the schools have done this. You can still visit the school on your own.

@uf2019 UF as an in-state school is already a gift. Usually, these amazing programs and scholarships are reserved for the best of the best. The beauty of this is that these same students are going to have amazing opportunities are very prestigious places which would include some hefty scholarships too

I know that UF has become a highly ranked school and one that is very difficult to get accepted too. But I hear about all these online business classes (aside from the current overall corona virus plan), I also wonder if these kids are getting the education and the opportunity that matches its current ranking. Some people are having a hard time reconciling the ranking vs the education.

@uf2019 Thatā€™s a very confusing choice for those kids. Basically any CS program in the top 150 would be more than sufficient for any potential employer. UF is currently #49 in the country. Some of the colleges you listed may be ahead but when you offset the cost to pay vs a free ride it makes no sense imo. Especially why choose Yale when there are 5 other Ivy schools ranked higher? The demand for CS is extremely high and choosing a college based on rankings that close as opposed to no student debt is a head scratcher.

@ufcs2024 I am a white male.

@uf2019 Wow, congrats to him. I am not interested in computer science, so I donā€™t think that matters much to me. I am still waiting on many more decisions though, and am not sure if I will take the scholarship or not.
