I agree with proudmom9. My daughter was also offered the Patterson scholarship so I “made her” go visit UK last October and apply to the school. She really liked the visit a lot. I don’t think she would have considered it without the visit. Now she is 90% sure she is going to commit. I am hoping that merit weekend will seal the deal for her. If she had already decided 100% that she was going to Kentucky I probably wouldn’t spend the money as we live in AZ. However, as a parent who would be thrilled with the financial benefits of her going to UKentucky, I am using merit weekend as my own personal recruiting tool.
I am glad your daughter is looking at it and really considering it. My son also got into Fordham- but even with their scholarship it was going to be a stretch to cover the costs. I am really glad I put him in the car and said we were going to go look at KY and I will never forget his reaction when asked about his visit. “I didn’t want to like it but I really liked it”.
Our spreadsheet, back in 2016, spit out an estimated four year cost of attendance at Fordham just above $90K WITH the full tuition scholarship.
Still true. It is excessively expensive and the only other school my son applied to was the University of Toronto which doesn’t even make admissions decisions until March and April. Glad he decided he really wanted KY.
@proudmom9 Fordham was my daughter’s 1st choice also! Loved that it was in NY, loved the Jesuit values, loved the thought of being on the rowing team. Loved Father McShane’s speech during scholar’s weekend. Did not love the mandatory classes that would make it difficult not to take a gap year to med/grad school. Did not love the biology department-very dated. She didn’t really care about “lifestyle” ie dorms but have you seen UK’s dorms? She might care if she would be stuck in a closet sized, shared floor bathroom, dated dorm at Fordham :).
She visited UK Merit weekend & was still not convinced, so we used points and visited again in April ( I think it was a “Go Blue” weekend?)l, advisor accepted a same day appointment with her even though she had already met with her over Merit weekend. The dean walked us to lunch and took time to really answer all of my daughter’s questions & she was sold at that point. Loved that UK had a human nutrition program & was interested in Biotechnology
I can’t speak for advisors in other colleges, but.the advisors in College of Ag are just amazing at their job! They go out of their way to help the students in every way possible.
@ArizonaParent if they are still offering it, encourage your daughter to apply & do the essay for the Diversity Scholarship. My daughter received an additional scholarship that pretty much pays for year 3 & 4 room & board as this is not offered anymore in the Patterson Scholarship.
@mominnewmexico do you remember at what point you were notified about the diversity scholarship? We are anxiously awaiting this decision in our home.
@rkelly1370 last year the deadline to apply for the William C Parker scholarship was March 15th. Just pulled my records & we received a letter dated March 28th—so pretty quick turn around time
We just got back from merit weekend and my son loved it. His first chance to really pull away and be independent as he attended orientation and interest sessions and then being able to pre-register and work with an advisor. He decided to audition for the wind symphony after sitting through an interest session on music and he was able to get the language placement exam out of the way. He tested out of the language requirement in German but wants to take Japanese and was able to register for that. He didn’t need the math placement exam because of his ACT scores and he was able to meet the advisors for the International Village LLC that he was accepted into. I am really glad we went as they also answered a lot of parent questions in our sessions. My son also got his student id made and all of his fun KY gear. Go Cats!!
If your son takes the CLEP test for foreign language he will get credit. Highly recommend!
Go Cats!
He is in IB classes so if he scores well he will get the credit. But IO am glad to know CLEP is an option if he misses the score as the IB exams are super intensive.
