Messed up SAT and GPA-Bye Bye MIT?

I messed up my sat and got 1320. Reason for this bad score is due to leg surgery I had which compelled me to stay in hospital for 6 weeks just before the SAT test and got to prepare for only 3 days. Will they consider my score?

MIT accepts well under 10% of applicants. And yes, MIT pays close attention to standardized test scores. Per the common data set standardized test scores are considered to be “important” in terms of making admissions decisions. Your scores are well below the 25th percentile which will I expect will negatively impact your chance of admission. https://mitadmissions.org/apply/process/stats/

IMO your surgery is not a valid excuse – you should have started to study way more than 6 weeks in advance. And you can still take the December SAT (and you could have started studying for that right after surgery).

Retake the SATs if you want MIT.

I was a student at MIT way back before there was SAT preparation. None of us prepared for the SAT at all. I never met any student who admitted to having an SAT as low as 1320. The lowest SAT that I ever saw among students who actually graduated was me with 1420 (800 math, 620 English), but I had good SAT subject test scores. My understanding is that admissions has gotten a lot more competitive in the intervening decades. On the other hand, your being out of school before taking the SAT cannot have helped you either.

If you want to attend MIT for undergrad then you need to do SAT preparation and retake. However, it is probably a better plan to look for other schools that would be a better fit.

I hope that you are recovering well from your surgery.

I don’t want to sound harsh and am sorry for your surgery but I don’t think that is going to cut it. Sure you can explain grade drops with your surgery but the SAT is intended to be an aptitude test (complete bs I’m aware, doesn’t test aptitude in the slightest) so you are going to have to retake it unless idk you have done a lot of research papers and other insane/unreasonable extracurriculars. Also, 75% of applicants are academically qualified and there are most definitely others with situations similar to yours in that pool. Sorry but college admissions aren’t fair.

Six weeks in the hospital for leg surgery?
