If anyone here has an MFA or is in an MFA program, could you please tell me about your experience with admissions and the importance of different factors (auditions, theatre background, etc).

Hollyb,

My daughter just went through the admissions process and I can tell you it was an extremely difficult process. The programs are generally very small and the admit rates as a result are low. If you want to get a handle on the type of students accepted you can google the school name and then “NYC showcase.” Most schools will have a sampling of the students and their resumes. From that you can see what the background of the student body is.

Just as an example, look at the Brown/Trinity Consortium web page they have an a specific area on the web site that you can view the resumes of the students. You will notice a mixed bag. Some will have years of experience and equity and others will be fresh out of college. Those fresh out of college seem to be honor students. They seem to take a good number from their undergrad program straight into their grad program.

After watching my daughter go through the process, it is my observation that most programs like to see a few years of experience.
