When i was a freshman i looked at a bunch of miami material and read reviews and stuff and decided it was my first choice, hands down, throughout high school i thought it was pretty much a given that i was going to miami... then the visits came, the ppl at the school arent as bad as what some ppl lead you to believe (im a URM from upper-middle class central indiana suburbs so we might have a few of the same views) but they were pretty bad. Miami isnt the type of school where you roll out of bed and go to class, most ppl wake up go running (im a track star and not even i do this everyday) come back take some health pills, take a shower and get dressed like there going out, when theyre actually going to class. The campus social scene is pretty nice but the town is terrible and the townsppl seem to despise the college kids. Biochem is pretty strong and miami has a pretty highly ranked undergrad chem program. Basically I think that miami was so lame that im not even going to apply after it was my first choice for 3 yrs. and ive already finished the app (yes i hate it that bad). Well actually i didnt hate it that much until i compared it to OHIO UNIV.(greatest school on earth).. miami is overrated and i wouldnt go there unless they gave me a full ride and even then it would still be a tough choice. I remember you saying you didnt like OU but basically miami is OU without the open-minded ppl, with a much worse town (if you dont like athens then oxford will be h-e-l-l), the ppl are way less nice and more elitist, and it doesnt have the bright future that Ohio U has. Oh and your right, denison sucks. I also agree that schools should not be chose on pretige (im out of state who plans on going to ohio u.. how much more against prestige can you be). Colleges should be chose by how they make you feel when your there or how the brochures and all your research make you feel. When I stepped foot on the ou campus i felt like i could spend my whole life there

I give up. Celebrian you can see here people are pretty united in their descriptions. If this is what you want by all means apply ED.

But I'm not applying ED lol. I was just looking for a range of opinons (which I got) not just yours. Take a chill pill:D

Miami actually attracts some of the best students in Ohio. Student last year in our local area National Merit Finalist 1560 SAT is attending this year. Several students from local High school are gold medal students in Cleveland Plain Dealer and AkronBeacon Journal attend Miami Univ. Miami has some of the best facilities I have seen on any campus in the United States. Rec Center, Student Union, new apartments for upper classmen. A beautiful campus. Great dorms and food. Academically Miami is strong. Has a top notch accounting department, and business program, and many other fine departments. Currently there are two US senators from Miami, Mike Dewine and I believe Patty Murray from Washington. Former Joints chiefs of staff member graduated from Miami. Recently Miami had one of the top debate teams in the nation and in the last few years finished in the top 5 of the Putnam math contest. At last years graduation from Univ of Chicago law school, one of the top law schools in the nation, the top graduate was from Miami University. Miami creates some of the strongest alumni of any school. Ap;rox 11 percent of incoming class is legacy although 50 percent of applications come from out of stateSorry to sound like a cheer leader for Miami but whenI hear those who never attended the school make unknowing statements I must repond

sorry but umm.. if you look at miami's mid 50% then you'll notice that 1560 sat is not typical at all at miami. Miami at one time attracted most of ohio's top students but these days a lot of the better students are goin to the small privates, schools like cinci and ohio u are continuously getting some of the better students as well... basically miami is trying to survive on its reputation and for many of the students this isnt enough. I have a few friends who go to miami, one of them loves it, and the other hate it. Miami is the kind of school that is rather hit or miss with students

My sister went to Miami and I attended Kenyon. Her education simply simply wasn't in the same league. To this day, she struggles with what I can only characterize as a complete inability to write effectively or even with appropriate grammar.
It seemed as if her personal growth was stunted at Miami. Whereas I was surrounded by incredibly intelligent and intellectual individuals at Kenyon, she seemed to have friends who, like her, held a very narrow view of the world with little real intellectualism on campus. Just my opinion, but to even mention schools like Bates, Kenyon, Macalester in the same breath with Miami seems pretty odd.
Perhaps her experience was not typical, but when I look at where our respective lives have led and te difference in the quality of our educational experiences, I am truly able to understand how your undergraduate education can have a profound impact on the rest of your life. Just an anecdotal opinion, for what it is worth.

Tifosi, great post.

basically to sum up this post. Miami is overrated so dont even waste time and money applying

terrybhs06, what is it that you didn't like about Denison?

Well I am applying happily :). After some last-minute shifting in my list, I found room for Miami and my other school :D

"terrybhs06, what is it that you didn't like about Denison?"
It is in the most god awful place on earth, the school has basically destroyed all partying, and it has a miami(OH) like student body and i basically stopped paying attention after i noticed that

Ohio University >>> Miami (OH)

IMO Kent State > OU and MU

In reality rankings of Ohio schools (publics) goes like this:
1. OSU
2. Miami
3. OU
4. BGSU
5. UC
6. KSU, Akron, Toledo, CSU, Youngstown State, Wright State
7. Central State

What's UC? oh stupid me. Cinci of course! lol! :D

I think there's a divide between #5 and #6 on your list though. #5 and up are generally much better quality and #6 and 7

umm... heres my rankings( public and u of dayton since its pretty big)

1.OU-Athens (not even close IMO)
2.U of Dayton (student body similar to OU w/ a more urban? surrounding)
3.Miami
4.OSU
5.BGSU
6.I really dont think anywhere else matters

Notable privates: Xavier, Kenyon, and otterbein or is it oberlin? well whichever one is in ohio is pretty nice

U.S. Senator Patty Murray is a proud graduate of Washington State University. Maybe the 'underwhelming' Maria Cantwell is a Miami grad. Cantwell is just another bored Microsoft millionaire forcing herself upon the public. Probably a trait she picked up at Miami U.

I hope you end up at Miami Celebrian, it seems to fit you.

The J Crew U stereotype is completely overblown.
As a student at Miami I find that i used to dress up almost 5 times as much at home as I do at Miami. This means-yes, i wear sweats to class... and no one cares. You can dress up to class or wear whatever- it doesn't matter either way. Additionally, people at Miami are not snobbish, and are actually some of the nicest people I have ever met. However, Miamians often come off as cocky...

but why?

because these people love their Institution like no other.
