I'm considering this school because it'd be in-state for me, only four hours from home which is very convenient. I originally wanted to go out of state, but seeing as how usually public/state schools are more expensive out of state (and I can't afford private schools) it's best to stay in-state. So going to schools a few hours away from home is how I can compromise.

Basically I wanted to know.. I have heard that this is a party school and it's got that reputation. I'm already in college, just looking to transfer and I'm not really into partying. It only matters if, when I graduate and am looking for a job, they say "isn't that a party school?" But i don't think they would.. I think my grades and degree matter more, right?

Also, I have heard that it has a very large, preppy, white, rich student population and if you don't "wear the right clothes" or have money then you're an outcast....? Sounds kind of like high school....

Also, I am considering them over Ohio State U because they are a smaller school. I don't like really large campuses so unless I am strongly advised to not go to Miami U, then I will look elsewhere.

What do you think?

If you’re a transfer, I agree that an in-state public college will probably be the best solution.

Miami has a reputation for being a party school and yes it has a lot of rich kids - the President/admins explained their repositioning/rebranding strategy a while back: they pretty much decided to become a sort of like-private university for rich kids who like to party but don’t want to skimp on academics. It’s offputting for some. However it has worked and the school does attract lots of strong students who can pay full OOS price. It does have good academics. And if you want to avoid kids who party all night every week, ask for the substance-free dorm. So yes if you can find your niche there things can be okay and employers will not think “Oh, party girl”. They’ll look at your grades, what classes you chose, and what leadership roles you took. You should visit and do an overnight stay though, because I know a few students who had to transfer due to the preppy/party atmosphere.

Email people at Hiram, Wooster, and, depending on your GPA, Kenyon. See whether you might be able to transfer there. Those are smaller schools with good reputations.

Hm, Ohio State University is HUGE, one of the largest in the nation (over 60,000 students!!) So obviously Miami is less large at 16,000 but it’s still large.
