Hey guys, I just accepted into the Harrison scholars program at Miami University in Ohio. Anyone know if this is a good program? Is it a good school?

I'm also a little tense about the demographics there. It's 92% white and 2% asian. Does this really matter?

This is the money program at MUOhio. A great deal. Not bad at all. More often than not, people turn it down for higher ranked schools. Not a negative comment on the program. Just the food chain at work. You'll run into the usual social problems. A few non-majority students complain.

In my year, a little over 50% of the accepted Harrisons ended up at Miami, and our yield was rather low. There will be Harrisons who go to a higher-ranked university, and there will be Harrisons who turn down higher-ranked schools in favor of the scholarship. I know there are other Asian Harrisons in your class, and Honors in general is more diverse than the rest of campus. Check your PMs.

My sister-in-law went there for 11 years and loved it! (She's actually a southern gal.) She got some kind of an advanced degree in paper technology and teaching. She has nothing but great things to say about it. It supposed to be a lovely campus.

I've got a 35 on the ACT and a 4.5 gpa and I'm a national merit semifnalist etc. No offense to the school at all, but do you think im overqualified to go to MU? Would it be a better option to go to washU or northwestern? Would i be settling for a mediocre school if i chose MU?

Where i come from im used to a pretty big social scene, party every friday etc. How's the social scene and night life at MU?

Statistically "overqualified". But can't ignore the money. Some people would choose WUSTL and Northwestern. Bigger reputations. Chicago and St Louis may offer more excitement.

The party scene is strong. Be careful, though. The school is cracking down on alcohol use/violations. There have been a few suspensions this fall for very minor violations (in my opinion).

You'll be "overqualified" at any school that offers a full ride IMO (you may want to read the safety school thread in the Parents Forum). One of my closest friends turned down Princeton in favor of Honors at Miami, and I know that most Harrisons were accepted at "top tier" schools. I'm definitely challenged in my science classes, and German is quite challenging. Like at any school, you can cruise through by taking "easy" classes, but you can also challenge yourself as much as you want. There is a Harrison in my year (sophomore) who is taking 2 graduate seminars and an independent study. Many students are involved with research; it's possible to start first semester, although most start as sophomores. The night life is fine, or so I've been told (I prefer Kofenya-- the local coffeehouse-- to frat parties). Oxford is certainly not a huge city, but there are plenty of things to do on campus.

hmm MU is starting to look better and better.

I'm thinking about doing the DAP thing with cincinatti and it says they accept 10 per year, but give preference to harrison scholars. Just looked at the app and they ask for, in my opinion, an excessive amount of redundant essays. Since im already a harrison do I need to take the app seriously? Theres 43 harrison scholars and the DAP website says the accept ten 10 people. On the same note, the website says the program usually spans 8 years. A lot of other direct med options offer a 7 year program...would it be possible to complete undergrad work at MU in 3 years so i can save a year? (This is a DAP specific question sorry...)

haha...anyways its nice to hear that the party scene is strong though.

I wouldn't blow off the application because you never know how many people are going to apply to the program, and I don't think there have ever been 10 people accepted in one year. It's definitely possible to graduate from Miami in three years, especially if you have AP credit, but most (if not all) Harrisons stay for four years. You can always do more research, be a UA (like a TA), take fun classes, etc.

My D and I visited Miami this fall, it was very nice. Good facilities, friendly professors and great study abroad options. My D too has been selected as a Harrison Scholar and as you know you must attend the special weekend in Feb. '07 in order to keep the option open.

It's good to know that miami accepts AP credits because i have a LOT (chem, bio, calc, us history, us government, euro history, stats, macro econ, micro econ, lit, and comp sci)

Any idea if they accept suff like multivariable calc and linear algebra taken senior year (its like a pseudo dual credit program at a CC)?
