has anyone started their common app for miami yet? I’m almost done! I’m applying to Miami University early action! along with OSU, Cincinnati, OU, Howard, and Hampton

DS has begun the general demographic info for the common app but will likely not complete essays for a while. (I think his first semester English class this year provides some essay help.) Also, he’s taking several SAT IIs in October, so will likely wait until those results are in before hitting the send button.

Miami University Oxford, Ohio

One of the first 8 “Public Ivies”
(had the look and feel of an Ivy League university.
In addition to academic excellence, other factors considered included
visual appearance, age, and school traditions as well as certain other Ivy League characteristics. )

One of the 30 Public Ivies according to Greene’s Guides
(public schools with academic quality comparable to an Ivy League institution. )

Miami’s Farmer School of Business is ranked very highly nationally.
-Excellent Accelerated MBA program (3rd in US)
Very highly rated honors program
Miami’s School of Education is also superb.
Miami is also a popular choice for Pre-Med, Pre-Law and Pre.MBA

But more than anything else Miami is famous for a great undergraduate education.
-8th in US for best undergraduate teaching
- Dartmouth College
- Princeton University
- Yale University
- Stanford University
- University of Maryland
- Brown University
- College of William and Mary
- Duke University
- Miami University–Oxford
- University of Notre Dame

-First Year Student Retention (full-time students): 90%
-Transfer Out Rate: 15%
-4-Year Graduation Rate: 68%
-6-Year Graduation Rate: 81%
-Unlike the huge research universities, Miami’s professors teach.
Far fewer classes are taught by grad-students, and classes are generally small.

Greek life is significant (25%) at Miami, TV show Greeks is loosely based on Miami
(its available on on Hulu)

Miami is heavily recruited by Fortune 500, locally famous as ‘The’ place to go to get a job at P&G
Miami is also known as ‘J Crew U’ for preppy, cute/attractive, upper middle-class student body.
(85% Caucasian - Highly diverse it is not) Students IMO are polite and well mannered.
FYI: If you are not from around here, Ohioans tend to be very friendly.

I have several friends and neighbors who are MU grads, all said they had great job offers before graduation.
(fiance, accounting, teaching, business, marketing, EE)
Campus looks like a movie set, classic red brick and white columns, perfect landscaping, very clean.
Oxford is a perfect LITTLE college town, if you are looking for Urban campus, look elsewhere.
FYI Local police run around on Segways, they act as student shepards, trying to keep them out of trouble.
Students are required to live in dorms first 2 years, the dorms are nice all are 3 story buildings, no high rises on campus.
Only Exception is dorm requirement is for Greeks moving into a house their 2nd year allowed.
(unless you live at home and commute)
Freshman are not allowed to get a parking pass (no cars for freshman) Bus runs a loop around campus/town.
Administration has a reputation for being a little to bureaucratic.
Parking is a problem.
Overall it seems a lot more like an expensive private school than a state university.

Miami University Alumni are VERY loyal to their school.
Common MU joke, if you want a pretty degree go to OSU, if you want a pretty good job go to MU.
Another one, for prospective MU students ‘if you don’t love hockey now, you will.’
I am not an graduate, but I have a son who is planning/hoping to be.
Graduate from MU and spend the rest of your life explaining, no not Miami, FL

Thanks for the info, gojack! We’ll be visiting in a few weeks–really looking forward to it! (Too bad it’s not hockey season, I guess.)

MyLB,

You are welcome,

If you are going on a campus tour… park in the Campus Ave Parking garage,
(located next where your tour starts/ends)
to get it stamped after the tour for free parking.

Schedule tour at: [Miami University: Visit Miami](http://www.miami.muohio.edu/admission/visit/)

Bus Route: <a href=“Page Not Found on the Users, Units, or Orgs Server | Miami University”>Page Not Found on the Users, Units, or Orgs Server | Miami University;

FYI: I wanted to add a couple random thoughts, MU probably trends more towards the center to a little conservative …as compared to many Universities.
IMO Business majors tend to be more conservative. But the MU Western College Program has a very liberal bent.

There is a group of cars next to the Oxford McDonald’s, that don’t seem to move all that much… I suspect “unofficial Freshman parking lot” (very large lot ) And it’s on the MU Bus Red and Yellow Lines.
Parking is bad enough that parking there and catching the bus is a wise choice for students that live off campus.

I love parking tips! We’ll be visiting IU on the same trip (taking my oldest out to school in Ohio), and I’m interested in the contrast. (The one doing the visits is interested in business and–not sure how this happened–is somewhat conservative.)

Up Town (near campus) area

Mac & Joes is the infamous MU hangout
[Mac and Joes - Oxford’s Original Restaurant and Saloon](http://www.macandjoes.com/)

Skipper’s/Top deck for beer and burgers
[Skipper’s Pub - Oxford, Ohio](skippers-pub.com)

‘Brick Street’ or ‘The Stadium’ for beer & Music (but not the food)
[Brick Street Bar - Oxford, Ohio](http://www.brickstreetbar.com/index.php)

The Smokin’ Ox has a pretty good BBQ

Of course there is always the famous ‘Cincinnati Chili’
[Skyline Chili - The Official Website of Skyline Chili](http://www.skylinechili.com/)

MU has its own hotel
[Marcum Conference Center & Miami Inn](http://www.hdg.muohio.edu/marcum/)

Uptown Holiday Inn is in the best area for campus/local flavor
everything is walkable from there
http://www.holidayinn.com/hotels/us/en/oxford/oxhoh/hoteldetail#Photos-Tours

Let me know what you think.

Cheers

Ah, another great resturaunt in Oxford is Jimmy Johns. Like Subway but wayyy better.

I’ve gone to MU for band camp the last 3 years and plan to apply there in the fall (: it’s one of my top choices. Amazing school, love the town.

No one has said Bagel & Deli? That’ll be my first stop when I visit my friends in Oxford. Earth Day bagel, here I come!

If any prospective students or parents have questions, feel free to ask or PM-- I graduated from Miami in May.

Gojack: I have to disagree with you on Brick Street’s food. We went there Wednesday night before freshman move in day. The beer was great, but IF you’re in the mood for bar food, the french fries were the best I have ever had and H said the same for the onion rings! It is not our favorite place to go in town, but it was great to be outside and enjoy a beautiful night before D started her new life as a Miami student. It was fun watching all her soon to be new classmates walking through town with their parents!

Anybody else attending honors Saturday? My husband has not yet visited MU. Son and I visited last fall. Looking forward to my husband’s chance to hear more about the school this weekend. My son left the campus last year with a a very satisfied “this seems like the perfect school for me.” We know several outstanding kids from our HS who have attended MU with very positive experiences.

My wife, son and I are planning to attend…if it doesn’t rain. My son and I visited over the Summer (my wife had to work) and had a miserable tour because it POURED the entire time we were there. I actually think it rained sideways because umbrellas were almost worthless. Considering it is a five hour drive (one way), I’m planning to hold off until there is decent weather so my son and wife can see MU at its best. Hopefully that will be Saturday…although there is a 50% chance of thunderstorms. Are these thunderstorms the remnants of the hurricane that came up through Mexico?

What’s left of tropical depression ‘Hermine’…
still a pretty sizable storm

[Intellicast - Weather Active Map](<a href=“Intellicast | Weather Underground”>WunderMap® | Interactive Weather Map and Radar | Weather Underground)

Thanks for the link. Doesn’t look good for Saturday but we’ll probably wait until late Friday to make a decision. Talked to MU yesterday and ALL the Scholars Saturdays are completely booked, so if we get rained out on Sat then we’ll probably wait for an accepted student visit in the early Spring.

gojack,
“But more than anything else Miami is famous for a great undergraduate education.
-8th in US for best undergraduate teaching”

-Nope, jumped up to #2.

Yes… This year MU jumped up to Number 2 because U.S. News & World Report changed the scoring/weighting…The weighting of the graduation rate was increased from 5% to 7.5%.

* Miami University is recognized as one of the nation’s best undergraduate institutions for 2010, according to the Princeton Review’s annual list.
-
Miami University has been identified as a best value in Kiplinger’s annual list of the “100 Best Values in Public Colleges.” (2010) Miami has appeared as a top 100 value every year since the first list was published in 1998.
-
In Business Week magazine’s latest ranking of undergraduate business programs, Miami’s Farmer School of Business appears among the nation’s top five percent, ranking sixth among public universities and colleges. (2010)
-
In the 2010 edition of America’s Best Colleges, U.S. News ranks Miami’s engineering program 26th in the nation in the category of “Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs where the highest degree is a bachelor’s or master’s.”
-
Survey results released by Entrepreneur magazine and The Princeton Review show the Miami University Institute for Entrepreneurship ranks 20th among the nation’s undergraduate entrepreneurship programs. (2010)
-
Miami seniors applying to law schools for the 20092010 school year were accepted at a rate of 92 percent, compared to a national average of 77 percent.
-
The medical school acceptance rate for Miami students is 63 percent, compared to 46 percent nationally. The figure rises to 90 percent for Miami students who earn a 3.4 g.p.a. and score at least average on the MCAT.

^Not sure about the last one, as GPA=3.4 no hookup from ANY UG do not have good chances at American Med. School. Average MCAT is in the same boat. Got to be at least 3.5+/33+

See: Placement of Miami University Students into Medical School
<a href=“Research and Innovation | Miami University”>Research and Innovation | Miami University;

“F. Number of Undergraduate Applicants that scored a minimum of 24 on the MCAT
(min. 8 on each section), had at least a 3.20 Science G.P.A., and had at least a 3.20
Overall G.P.A.: 269
G. Number of Undergraduate Applicants with the Academic Profile outlined in
section F that gained acceptance into Medical School: 217 ‐> 80.7%.”

^Must be some very very old stats. MCAT = 24 even with Harvard GPA = 3.2 - practically no chances at Med. School.

To let you know how low MCAT=24 is, some kids have higher on their first practice test with zero preparation time.

However, pre-med is awesome at Miami, zoology department among the best in a country and pre-med committee is very helpful.

It might also include students who were accepted at DO schools.

And you don’t need a 33 MCAT score to get into med school. A 30 is a solid, if not amazing, target score.
