Miami University Pre-Med

I got into Miami University with $7,000 merit scholarship (in-state). I want to major in Biology and co-major in pre-med. Could you guys tell me how good is Miami Pre-Med program compared to Ohio State, Case Western, UC, or Ohio U.

Also I didn’t get accepted into honor program or scholar program but I heard that there is still a chance to apply after first semester. So what are the requirement to get into those program when I apply after my first semester. I have very high gpa and low act score but all my course during my junior or senior year was college level (AP,or CCP).

I can tell you why I feel Miami is better for pre-med than a couple of those schools. My son applied to Case Western and was accepted with a $28,000/yr scholarship and it would still cost him roughly $80,000 to $100,000 more to attend there for four years than it would for Miami U when all things including his scholarship and the tuition promise are factored in. Maybe CWRU is a little better than Miami U for pre-med, maybe not. But I’m sure my son will be happy to have that $100,000 we saved when he’s is in med school. As far as UC, are you meaning the University of California? If you are, there are some great schools in the UC system but they are notoriously bad for pre-med as a result of being overcrowded and underfunded. If you attend one of the UC schools as s pre-med expect zero support or guidance from the university while you try to compete on a curve against thousands of other students for a small handful of A’s being awarded. A lot has been written about the staggering amount of bright kids that start UC as pre-med and are intentionally weeded out by the school as quickly as possible. Compared to the UC’s, Miami U has it’s act together in a big way when it comes to support for pre-meds. I am not sure if you can get into the premedical scholars program later on or not. I would call them and ask if I were you.

@AS12345 Here is info on applying to the Miami honors program during the first semester http://miamioh.edu/academics/honors-programs/uhp/admission/current-student-admission/index.html

I meant UC as in university of cincinnati but thanks anyway.

Miami’s sticker price is higher than that of Ohio’s other state universities, so make sure that you compare net prices, not just scholarship amounts. That said, I’m not aware of any reason why Miami would not be a good place to complete premed. For more info, there is a premed forum on CC as well other boards on the web.

@AS12345 Sorry about that…from the left coast where UC only means one thing!

I would add Youngstown State, Kent State and Akron to your list of schools to consider. All have affiliations with NEOMED in Rootstown and provide an excellent path to medical school. If you are an Ohio resident and serious about medical school, this is something that should be explored.

I applied to kent state and got accepted but I decided to go to Miami Univerity because is financial it is better option.

@AS12345 Keeping your college debt down is very wise if you are looking to attend medical school. There used to be a mom of a daughter that attended Miami and then went on to medical school and she was very positive about Miami.

I just found a page about NEOMED that I will share. There are other schools that participate and it looks like BGSU is joining as well. https://www.neomed.edu/medicine/admissions/paths/bacc-md/
