Miami University's Freshman Class is 200 Short

Miami University in Oxford, Ohio just announced that their freshman class is 200 students short of what they anticipated. They attribute the drop to the fact that many admitted students applied to many schools and did not make Miami their first choice. I would think that they might be agreeable to looking at applications from students who were not picked up from waitlists elsewhere.

Where did you find this announcement?

Might have to do with the new high instate tuition too.

lorelei2702: It was on the local radio and in the Cincinnati Enquirer. Barrons: You are so right.

Isn't that big tuition increase really just a paper transaction for instate students?? I thought instaters got an automatic scholarship of some type that compensates for the jump in cost.

Tuition is over $11,000 after the grant if you are upper income at all.

$11,000 puts Miami in the neighborhood of the other Ohio state schools - all within about $3,000 per yr. for tuition of each other. And, at $11,000 a year, Miami's a steal compared to 90% of the other schools discussed in depth on CC!

My understanding is that it is a great campus....solid education... Proctor and Gamble money funded some of the programs or buildings.. very reasonable costs... only thing to be aware of is predominance of frat/sorority life...Greek life is big and if that is not you, then this may not be the school for you....

Friends brother is a bio professor there, hired about a year ago from a private Southern U.He's impressed with the campus and quality of his colleagues and their research.Likes living in the midwest so far (cost of living, school systems for his two young ones).
He didnt think the frat scene was too overwhelming, but then again,he had been on a private southern U campus previously!!!

It is a beautiful campus..and very well kept and clean. Lots of red brick and stone bldgs, green spaces and trees. The town of Oxford is tiny, though - offers the bare necessities, but that's about it. It's the drive that is the killer.....only about 40 miles outside Cincinnati, but it's the longest 40 miles you'll ever drive - over a glorified cowpath of a road.

In addition to the "scenic" drive from Cincinnati and the lovely park-like campus, Miami has great food, a safe environment, and a wonderful overseas program in Luxembourg.
My sister and I survived 4 years as GDIs. Our brother transferred after a year--too "snobby/preppy" for him. This is a big school with lots of clubs/activities; greeks probably dominate the social scene, but you don't have to be greek to enjoy it.

Question:

Would an Ohio student be better off at Miami, OSU, or even OU?

Miami, The OSU, and OU are different places w/ different pluses and minuses. Like an urban settng? Forget OU and Miami. Interested in engineering? Go OSU. Journalism? OU's strength.

At all three schools, you can get a great education, or party your life away. It's your choice.
