MICA or USC? animation or animation/engineering?

What is the better choice?

MICA: major in animation/fine art?

USC: major in fine art and minor in computer science (animation)?

What do you think is the best program? I'm good at fine arts and want to be an animator but I also want to learn about computers (in case an art job dosen't provide a good salary)

My son attends MICA and loves it. He wants to be a video game artist and almost applied to USC’s School of Cinematic Arts Interactive Media major, but felt the odds were too slim on getting in. I think the acceptance rate was around 5%. I still wish he had applied though, as I thought USC’s Interactive Media major was head and shoulders above everyone else.

I know USC’s School of Cinematic Arts has an Animation major. If you think you could get accepted into that I would think you might be able to minor in computer science. I doubt whether USC is as highly regarded as MICA for it’s Fine Arts major, though.

As much as I like MICA, with today’s economy I think I would pick USC if it were me.

Animation is studied at USC in the School of Cinematic Arts. The major is Animation and Digital Arts. Computer science can be taken as a minor. Check with SCA to confirm that.

Here is a suggestion. Go to YouTube. There is a series of videos from the SCArts. Look at the video about the animation major. The spectacular cinematic arts complex will have a new addition. A state of the art building will be added where the animation students will be relocated. The estimated cost of the animation building is $50 million.

If possible, try to visit the SCA complex and see for yourself what the animation program offers.
