MICA summer precollege 08

Did you get any scholarship for Tuscany?
Notification to $ 5000 due is within a week sounds crazy!
congrat!!
Is she in the first group or second?
You must tell us how it went.
I set MY mind to make MICA happen before jounior year but come to think of it, it was real stretch... Oh well. It is another good lesson to be learned.

Yes, she did get a scholarship, it will be a stretch but will be worth it. She is looking forward to receiving the program details.

With bit of portfolio scholarship he is off to Baltimore.
Thank you all.
No more Starbucks, eat out, take out, movies, late night cab ride, I don't know what else to cut back but I am so happy I don't care.

I did the (regular) Mica pre-college program a few years back and it was THE BEST summer experience I had my entire HS years. Four of my friends from that summer ended up going to MICA- and I got a scholarship b/c of my good work in the program (without even applying to the school!!). I don't go to MICA but I would recommed the program regardless of whether it is at the regular school or Tuscany. ITS AMAZING. (and so much cheaper than some of the others offered...elsewhere cough*RISD)

FluffyFluff :)
Does it make any difference which grade or how old you are besides college acceptance advantage?
Can you tell me which school you choose to attend and why not MICA?

yeah!! bears and dogs!!

Congrats to everyone who got accepted! I got accepted as well (very surprised and grateful) I understand no real names are used here, as it is "college confidential" after all, but I just wanted to let everyone know that there is a facebook group called 'MICA precollege 08'-it's been very helpful to contact others who are going and I am sure in the upcoming weeks would be even more-so you know what everyone is bringing, who you are being roomed with, etc. I would definitely encourage joining it!

hellokitty- Are you going to Baltimore or Tuscany?

Findmepete

I try to PM you but couldn’t.
Like you suggested, we kept our option open and he is offered spot for Tuscany 2 that become available in last minutes. I cannot believe it!
This just happened and confirmed now, it will be awhile for us to get more info.
So is your girl in 2 group? Need recent doctor’s form sort of thing? What and how much to bring?

bears and dogs - I sent youa PM let me know if it didn't go through, it should. My daughter hasn't heard anything yet but it is suppose to be coming soon just be sure to have your passport. As hellokitty said there is a Facebook group for Mica and a specific one for Tuscany where she has found five or so kids.

I got accepted to MICA pre-college in Baltimore, but I did not get my first pick class.
My first pick was digital Photography, but they gave me film.
I have not worked too much in film and, to the extent of my understanding, you are supposed to be pretty good at yoru CORE class. Shoudl I still go? I've tried e-mailing them to put me on teh waiting list for digital, and am even going to acll them. I'm quite surprised I didn't get digital because I put my best stuff in there and even my photojournalist friend said she was confident I would get it. Oh well
advice please?

The Tuscany program ended in July and letter grade came in the mail a month later, then they sent him a certificate of completion with gold seal yesterday.
From bits and pieces he told me I was expecting somewhat different outcome, but he is awarded 2 credits, phew.
Would Baltimore program have been different?
I am so very happy he went to Tuscany; it changed his purpose to do art.
But for the actual college admission prep, I wonder… if you would like to try residential life and grueling assignment to see how it is, maybe better to stay in Baltimore. Of course it all depends on what kind of students they are.
Now he wants to be a rock star so he can buy a house in Tuscany and paint as he please in the spear time.
School starts in few days as Junior. Any advice?

My son is very interested in doing this program if it is offered again in 2009. I'd love to hear from anyone who did it in 08. What did you think? Would you recommend it?
Thanks!

Go on Facebook and check the Tuscany 08 thread. Many photos, even a video posted of their experience. I agree with bears and dogs, not grueling, rather very enjoyable experience for the students. It seems they adopted a more relaxed European attitude which allowed the kids to be more experimential witht their artwork. My d in particular loved the time spent making friends with the towns people and trying to learn Italian. The group of students came from varied backgrounds and the creative energy they seem to experince from one another was as valueable as any lesson. Mine d would also love to go again.

Just to add some to this thread, even though it’s a year old, I just got back from MICA pre-college in Tuscany and it was amazing. The people were really great, and the small town atmosphere was really nice and relaxing. There’s a little frustration over the painting at some points, because the critiques can be a bit confusing, but overall it’s pretty relaxed. My only complaints would be the fairly repetitive food, my roomate situation (we were basically polar opposites), and the lack of technical instruction, which I especially needed.

Sirensong - Thanks for the 2009 update.

I have flagged this for my son to look into for summer 2011!

I did the 2009 program as well, and I had a similar experience. The location was amazing, but the instruction was very limited. We only had two teachers (one of whom was not present half the time), and they often gave very little, or conflicting, advice.

The food was at times excellent and at other times mediocre, and the rooms would be extremely uncomfortable for anyone who’s high-maintenance. However, if you keep a positive outlook and are pretty self-motivated you can get a lot out of the program.

wow this is pretty embarrassing… how naive… wish I (and my budget) stayed that way. Starbucks? cabs? was it only two years ago? seriously?
where all these people go? findmepete, sdad, patois…

Tuscany was great, food is the thing he still talks about.
I posted long blah blah in the few thread down about summer pre college page 3 if anyone cares.
